Everyone has a group of friends that you go to for support in college. They are by your side most of the day, whether that be in classes, during meal times, or simply hanging out in your dorm. My squad has a tradition of enjoying meals at the local Denny’s together and playing video games on the weekends. No matter what the scenario, your squad has your back through thick and thin, and you are there for them just as much. There are some characteristics that you can’t help but notice your squad shares with any other group of friends. Take a look at five qualities that make you love your college squad.
1. The parental quality.
This is the friend who acts like your parent all the time. “Are you sure you want to buy that?” “Text me when you make it back safely.” “You should really be working on your paper.” I’m sure you read those in the voice of a parent because it definitely sounds like something mine would say. The friend who tries to act like your parent is a good friend to have because they keep you grounded. Sometimes, you get overwhelmed at college and try to make irrational decisions. This friend will help you see that you should focus your energy on important things, such as getting a good education.
2. The comical quality.
This is the friend who makes you laugh at any moment. I think this is the best part about having a great squad. My squad is always making jokes and laughing at everything. My favorite memories with laughter include my perfect impression of Adele’s “Hello” when I was really sick, and making funny videos on Snapchat with my friend Shelby.
3. The lazy quality.
This is the friend who will do anything not to move. Sometimes, this means not getting out of bed for class. One of my friends decided not to go to class because she saw a single drop of rain and did not want to go out in the weather. I won’t mention any names, but Tarae’ really did not seem to care for her calculus class. I will admit to almost falling out of bed just to reach something because I did not want to get out of bed and walk a few steps to get it. My friends and I often use “Nose Goes” to make others do something for us. For example, if we had to walk down the hallway to microwave popcorn, we’d ask “Who is going to make the popcorn?” Quickly, everyone would put their finger on their nose until one person was left to complete the activity. “Nose Goes” may indeed be the best game for laziness.
4. The problematic quality.
This is the friend who is always facing some sort of dilemma. Sometimes, I’m that friend, but other times, it is someone else. I always feel bad when my friends are facing something challenging, but I always make it a point to be a good friend and help them through the hard times in the best way possible. Sometimes, the dilemmas are small, such as failing a single exam, but other times, the dilemma is trying to figure out how to make ends meet for college or trying not to fail an entire course. No matter what, the rest of the squad is there for the person with the problem.
5. The chef quality.
This is the friend that is always trying to make you eat. They have a stock pile of snacks in their room, but they constantly buy new things to try. I remember once making a cheesecake for dinner, complete with strawberries and a chocolate peanut butter drizzle. After I enjoyed two pieces, I made sure to force my friends into trying a piece. There has to be at least one friend in every squad who makes sure to keep their squad fed.
6. The tech-savvy quality.
This is the friend who you go to for any computer problem. Actually, this is the one person you trust to fix your computer, your phone and anything else that has to be plugged in at one point or another. I’m awful with some forms of technology, so my friend always has my back. My friend, Brittany, has actually designed a website for a company, so I know that I can trust her to fix my computer. She is learning all the coding stuff, too, that makes absolutely no sense to me but seems to be pretty amazing.
All in all, my squad is pretty great. The cool thing is that not one of us just embodies one of these qualities, but instead, we all share many of these qualities. I love my squad so much, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I cannot wait to be reunited with them soon when the fall semester starts. I am sure that everyone with a squad like mine feels the same way.
