Growing up in a small town and then going off to a big city to college can be intimidating. It feels like a completely new world. There's just so much more EVERYTHING and suddenly your everyday life as completely changed. So, I present to you, six problems all small town kids face when they go to a big city university.
1. There are so many people
The town you grew up in probably had less than 10,000 citizens. So, things can get a little crowded when you attend a school with five times more students than where you grew up. Most general education requirement lectures are probably a lot larger than your whole graduating class in high school.
2. There is so much traffic
Where I come from, the most traffic you usually see is four or five cars backed up behind either a tractor or a school bus. That's nothing compared to trying to get around downtown or on highways where it can take you 15 minutes to go less than a mile.
3. Finding decent parking can be harder than trying to pass a class
Luckily, large universities usually have plenty of places to park, but during peak hours of the day or a particularly busy afternoon on campus parking can be an absolute nightmare.
4. The fashion can be pretty different
If you come from a town that is particularly fond of Carhartts and boots, you might find yourself a little out of place outside of the ag campus.
5. Nobody knows where you're from
If you're from a small town, it's likely that nobody has actually heard of it when you tell them where you're from. So usually you just say you're "from a town that's X minutes from (insert closest notable city)" in order to save time explaining.
6. There are so many choices
When you leave a town that has exactly 1 bar, 3 pizza places and 1 small grocery store and move to a university in a big city, you suddenly enter this world with nearly limitless opportunities for food, nightlife, and shopping. It can honestly be difficult trying to decide what to eat, what to eat, and where to go.
