What better way to spend a snow day than nestling into the couch with a drink and a blanket and watching good movies? While waiting out this last snow day, I spent some time thinking about my favorite movies with an old school feel. Some movies are relatable and some are more of a day-dream, but they’re all pretty nostalgic. Next snow day pour some Kalua in that hot chocolate, crash on the couch, and watch a day’s worth of good movies!
1. Dazed and Confused
Unfortunately, I am not able to relate to this one since I was pretty sheltered in high school. But I like to think I was a more sociable and outgoing kid in a past life. Dazed and Confused is set in the late 70's as a class of middle school students begin their last summer before they enter high school. The best parts of this movie? Good old rock n roll music and cool old cars!
2. Almost Famous
This movie is wishful thinking for me. I can only dream of touring with a band as a blooming journalist! Almost Famous is set 70's as a budding music-loving journalist accidentally goes on tour with Stillwater while writing for Rolling Stone Magazine. The best parts: good old rock 'n roll and travel!
3. Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
This movie straight up has good music. The story line is what really gets me. It’s a crime comedy set in the late 30's in rural Mississippi and loosely based on Homer’s The Odyssey. And it’s an awesome story!
4. The Help
Okay, this movie is set in the early 60's in Jackson, Mississippi. Three black women work in white homes while Skeeter writes a revealing book about their lives. I’m not able to relate to it, but I love the idea of writing a life-changing book!
5. The Secret Life of Bees
Lily spends the summer of 1964 in Sylvan, South Carolina with her abusive father and their housekeeper. Lily, with the help of Rosaleen, and begins her search to find out what really happened to her mother. The story gives you a good old timey feeling with a bittersweet ending.
6. Dead Poets Society
As a book nerd, I love this story to no end. It has scandal, books, learning, breaking away from the typical education system, and Robin Williams! Oh Captain, my Captain! Set at a Vermont boarding school in the late 50's, Mr. Keating teaches his elite students to live their lives as they want. This movie has history, drama, and a love of learning. The best part: Robin Williams!
