For the entirety of our academic lives, it seems as though we've been getting told about what college would be like. Even when it felt like college was a million years away, we were still discussing it and what would be expected of us once we got there. Now that I'm in college and have gotten the gist of what college life is about, I can confirm that not everything we were told about college is true. Here are a few examples of lies we were told about college.

1. "Professors won't let you come into class late."

Each professor is different and has their own set of rules. But in huge lecture halls where attendance isn't taken, you can pretty much come and go as you like as long as you're not being disruptive to the class. You might have a harder time sneaking in late without being noticed in smaller classes, but even then some professors will just be happy you showed up at all.

2. "All your classes will be huge and over-crowded."

Since I go to a school with 33,000 students, there will obviously be some instances where I'll have a class in a 500 person lecture hall. But while general ed courses can get pretty big, there are lots of classes that are closer to the size you were used to in high school. And if you ever feel lost in a huge class and need more personalized help, instructors always offer office hours.

3. "Professors don't care if you pass or fail."

While it is true that professors will get paid regardless of how you do in their class, many instructors do really care about their students and their success. Again, office hours are a must if you're ever in need of extra help or you just want to get to know your professors better. Hint: professors are more likely to bump up a borderline grade at the end of the semester if you take the time to come to office hours.

4."Attendance isn't mandatory in college, but go to class anyway."

Yes, obviously you should go to class, but it's not always true that attendance isn't mandatory. Lots of teachers give a grade for attendance. Even if they don't, you'll probably have a hard time passing exams if you don't show up to learn the material.

5. "People are going to try and peer pressure you into drinking and drugs."

Listen. People are going to ask you if you want a drink. If you say no, they literally will not care. If you decide not to drink, no one is going to look down on you for it. Same with smoking or whatever else.

6. "The Freshman 15 is unavoidable."

It's avoidable. There are healthy options and you've got a gym on campus! It's definitely possible to gain those 15 pounds but you can avoid it if you're mindful. Also if you've got a big campus, you can get a workout in by just walking to class.

We've been told a lot of stuff about college, and some tips are more accurate than others. Just remember to have fun and do great things in your new environment!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
