6 Horrible Things About Plattsburgh Winters

For those of you that call Plattsburgh home during the winter time, you know just how bad it can get, even though this winter isn't exactly an example. But usually winter is a seven-month-long ordeal that transforms the town from an average suburbia into an Arctic tundra. Whether it be the ridiculously cold temperatures or the fleeting amount of sunlight that gets you down, there's bound to be something about Plattsburgh winters that will drive you insane.

1. When your car won't start because it's so cold outside.

Let’s face it - most of us don't have brand new cars, and the ones who do have them are forced to battle enough issues as it is. But add sub-zero temperatures, inches upon inches of snow, and giant ice-sheets to the mix, and our cars are up against a whole new monster. Growing up here in Plattsburgh, I can't tell you how many times I got ready for school, put my coat on, and walked outside only to find that my car wouldn't start. And it still happens today.

2. …and how you have to wait forever for the ice to melt off of your windshield. Or viciously attack it.

Or if you're late for work and you just have to drive pretending you're looking through some cool new Instagram filter called “Ice Haze.” It's annoying, dangerous, and all-around time consuming. Why does the ice have to freeze to the glass anyway? Can't it just go on and freeze somewhere else, just preferably not the road?

3. It gets dark outside at 4 p.m.

Sunlight is good for your mood, your health, your body and your overall god damned sanity. There's hardly any sun in winter as it is, so the face that the gray skies turn to black makes it even more dismal. When it gets dark out before you're finished with your classes for the day, it's super discouraging for some reason. Things just don't feel right when it's dark out so early in the day: the lack of a gradual sunset replaced by an ever-present gloom that’s only change is which shade of grey it takes on is just straight up sad.

4. And when it is sunny, it's absolutely freezing outside.

Sure we may get a few sunny winter days once in a while up north, but when we do they sure are cold. Like brick cold. You wake up one morning and actually see a blue sky outside of your window instead of gray! Wow, today is going to be a good day! But wait, it's negative 14 degrees and there's a 22 mph wind? Not so fun. It may look pretty, but it feels more like a blizzard than those cloudy days ever did.

5. There's even less to do here in the winter than in the summer.

As if Plattsburgh isn't lacking enough in non-alcohol related activities, the choices are even more limited in the winter than during summertime. I know, shocking, considering just how boring it is here year-round.

6. Walking to class becomes a life-threatening trek instead of a simple walk.

The wind is hitting your face. Your hood won't stay up. You can't use your phone because your hands are too cold. Holding onto your coffee is now one of the most difficult tasks of your day. This is a three minute walk outdoors during a Plattsburgh winter. What should be a leisurely walk from one building to another is now a fight for your life in what feels like Antarctica.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
