I love the food at Thanksgiving and the family time during Christmas, food and family are great, but there are so many other things in life to be celebrated. We all know of #nationalpuppyday and #nationalsiblingday because of the myriad posts on Instagram, but what about all the other holidays that go unnoticed? And why can't we make up some new ones to celebrate other great things? Here is a list of quirky little hypothetical holidays to get you in a celebratory mood.
1. Decade Day
Pretend like it's the decade you were born in. Us 90's kids could get a group of three girls and three guys together, dress up in black and white and play in a fountain. Or we could just listen to NSYNC while wearing light, high-waisted jeans.
2. Save the Planet Day
This should really be a never-ending holiday. I know we have Earth Day, but the only thing I did for Earth Day this year was hug a tree and get a bagel sandwich called an "Earth Day." I consider myself a fairly eco-friendly person, but I didn't really do anything terribly eco-friendly on Earth Day, so I'm proposing a more specified holiday that may be celebrated by being super eco-friendly (riding your bike instead of driving, not using anything disposable, planting a tree, etc).
3. Do-Re-Mi Day
A day where you have to sing what you'd normally speak. Feel free to throw a few dance numbers in there, maybe some background singers, an instrument or two.
4. Pet Appreciation Day
I know there's national puppy day, but what about cats and birds and lizards and fish and everything else? Personally, I think this should be the third or fourth biggest holiday of the year. There could be parties, cake, decorations, a geofilter, a statue, maybe a concert in Time Square. Pets are sometimes the only things that can make us happy, and they deserve to be cared for, well-fed, and celebrated.
5. Thanksgiven Day
Most of us have been in a turkey-sweet-potato-pumpkin-pie coma before. Because of this, I vote that Black Friday be moved to Saturday and Friday be made Thanksgiven Day. Our thanks have been given, now let us sleep until noon and stay in our pajamas all day eating leftovers. Also, I know some people who leave their Thanksgiving dinners early to get to stores on time, which is another reason Black Friday should be moved. Who wants to have to leave their family and the pumpkin pie just to get a few discounts on towels?
6. Dark Ages Day
I know this sounds weird, but I really think we should have a national holiday devoted to unplugging. We can keep the electricity running, and maybe even the AC, but it wouldn't kill us to put the phones and laptops away for 24 hours. Maybe you can learn how to play chess, go for a walk, or have a great conversation with your grandma.
I love holidays because they're something to look forward to, something to enjoy, and something to remember. Why shouldn't we have a few more?
