The recipes you've never heard of but seriously need to try. If you're sticking to plain yellow and chocolate batter you are definitely missing out on the deliciousness.
1. Buttered caramel popcorn cake.
So this may not sound like the most appetizing of combinations, but that is a serious misconception. If you like the caramel frappuccino at Starbucks or chocolate pretzels you will love this cake. It's an awesome combination of salty and sweet. Plus butter and popcorn, what goes together better than that, even if it is buttercream icing.
2. Maple Belgian waffle cake.
So if you like Belgian waffles and you want to have an excuse to eat cake for breakfast this is the cake for you. This cake is made up of Belgian waffles and maple cake batter layers with a buttery maple buttercream icing and topped with a drizzle of maple syrup. The maple cake is tender and the waffle center is slightly chewy, but soft enough to cut with a fork edge. It's lovely on its own but even more delicious with a cup of strong coffee.
3. Sweet potato layer cake with molasses buttercream.
If there were any cake recipe you would need to take a leap of faith with this one. This is definitely more of a fall flavor, but an awesome one at that, with a mild sweetness and spice of pumpkin pie. Of the six cake recipes on this list, this is without a doubt the most difficult, but completely worth the great taste. The consistency of this cake is beyond fluffy and moist. It's absolutely delicious.
4. Fresh pear cake with whipped brown sugar buttercream.
This is admittedly a little more of an autumn recipe. Pumpkin, cinnamon, apples, pears, salted caramel, maple…my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The warm aroma that fills your home as this cake is baking is reason enough to make it. The smell of this cake could easily put Bath & Body Works and Yankee Candle out of business. And if the smell gets you, just wait for the great taste.
5. French toast layer cake.
So when you get down to it, a French toast layer cake is actually a cinnamon swirl cake with a buttercream maple frosting and a cinnamon maple ganache. Seriously, if you've been sticking to those simple chocolate or yellow cakes, you're really missing out. If you have a French toast lover in your life, or a maple lover, or a cinnamon lover, or a cake lover, you need to make this cake.
6. Speckled egg cake.
With Easter on the way, this is a perfect cake to have on your list. Inspired by the gorgeous color and texture of robins’ eggs, this cake is actually super easy and incredibly beautiful. The most important thing to know is that you need to freeze the cake in advance to set the icing for the speckling design. This isn't difficult, but it takes a little time. Other than that this cake is a vanilla bean dream.
