Writer’s block: we have all had it before, and sometimes it stays longer than we would like it to. Writer’s block occurs when someone is trying to complete a piece of written work, but the brain just won’t generate new ideas.
When experiencing writer’s block, it can be one of the most frustrating feelings. You feel as though you are on the verge of something great, but then all of a sudden, you hit a brick wall that you just can’t seem to pass. You try jumping over the wall and walking around it, but it stretches on for miles and towers over you. It happens to the best of us at the worst possible times, but how do you defeat such an obstacle without running out of time on your deadline?
While there are many reasons that cause writer’s block and many supposed cures, the best way to cure the annoying “blackness” that covers your mind is to just walk away from your work for a short period of time. Walk away from the computer or pen and paper in your hands. There is nothing worse for writer’s block than to stay put where the creativity just isn’t flowing. Walk around. Gain some inspiration from your surroundings. It’s when you look for the little details and notice the things that might seem unimportant throughout your daily life that help create the best inspired works.
Another method that works for writer’s block is to let your mind wander in the shower. The shower is a magical place to generate ideas. It’s where your body feel comfortable, and your mind will finally break down its road blocks. There is no method to how you think or what you think about. Just let the ideas go!
Writer’s block also prevents people from thinking of ideas. All pieces of writing begin with the initial thought of what to write about. It’s hard to write, though, when you have no idea where to start. Even in school, when students are given a clear topic for their papers, writer’s block still slides its way in to disrupt any progress that is or needs to be made.
It’s important to know to not get frustrated with writer’s block. If the piece that you’re working on is pressing on a deadline, trust in yourself that you will get it done. If you are a person who does their work and rarely misses deadlines, you probably do not have much to worry about. For those who routinely miss deadlines, set a personal deadline for yourself before you actually have to turn your work in.
So, don’t blame everything on writer’s block just yet, and unfortunately, your teachers probably won’t take it as an excuse. Take things easy and the words will come to you in no time. Patience is the key to all solutions involved with writer’s block. It’s hard to think of ideas right on the spot, so wait until your creativity hits you hard in the face and you are able to complete your work.
