The greatest awards show ever was this past Sunday and really I just need to geek out (even though this was wrote before they aired).
As soon as the nominations came out, this was a record-breaking year. "Hamilton" came out of the gate sprinting with a record 16 nominations. All the show needs is to win 13 to beat the previous record. I'm assuming that they've done it, but again it's only Friday. It's obvious why. Plus Lin-Manuel Miranda is nominated for 3 personal Tony Awards plus Best Musical.
I could go on about "Hamilton" for probably like ever (probably will in an upcoming article and if I don't then others will. Guaranteed), but there's so much more to geek out about.
Like the host. Ever heard of James Cordon? Maybe you've seen him on "Doctor Who." Or you know, the host of "The Late, Late Show" with the popular segment Carpool Karaoke.
Of course I embedded the Broadway version here. Check it out and fall in love.
Anyway... James Cordon is going to be amazing. He has a background in musicals ("Into the Woods" anybody?) He also has a Tony Award himself and is funny. Plus he's already admitted he's nervous and every great performer gets butterflies for the big performance.
Next up on the geek out list is that fabulous woman sitting in the backseat. Audra McDonald is amazing and kinda a record breaker herself. She has won 6 Tony Awards including one from four different acting categories. I mean do you hear that voice?
Ever heard of "Spring Awakening?" Maybe. I mean it's a great show. It won a Tony Award for Best Musical back in 2007 and now it's up for Best Musical Revival. But this isn't just any show revival. This is a revival by Deaf West which is this amazing theatre company that embraces disabilities. So "Spring Awakening" is a cast made up of people with all sorts of disabilities. Much of the show is done with sign language. It really is a beautiful sight to see.
There's some big names nominated too. Jessica Lange, Jeff Daniels, Lupita Wyong'o, Jonathan Groffand of course, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Check out the photos of everyone looking fabulous.
The Tony awards are always an amazing show because, well, it's what theatre does. Puts on a show. With performances by 10 different shows as well as an opening and closing number, there's going to be a lot of music and dancing and fun. Glitz and glamor included.
Plus there's so much history in the show. And history to be made.
A sad part of this year's history must be mentioned though. That would be the lack of category for sound production. This craft has been included in past shows, but it was decided last year that the category would no longer be a Tony Award category. I still believe this to be unfair. I think it's just as important as lights, costumes, directors, and the actors themselves.
So I hope you joined me this year in all the Tony Awards glory, and if you didn't but wish you had; there are most probably links online somewhere.
