It seems as though we are born into a world where we always feel the need to impress others. Having another’s approval, whether it’s from parents, teachers or kids at school is the ultimate goal for some people. It feels as though personal definitions of success mean nothing unless there is approval from others that comes with it. Some people lose interest in the activities and hobbies that they love if they are not approved of by others.
While approval is a crucial part of life, sometimes a person’s praise of an accomplishment is not necessary to fulfill the happiness in someone’s heart. Having approval not only drives people to insanity, but it also does not make a person truly happy.
Approval is just a way to get into people’s heads and make them believe that the only way to be successful in life is to do everything exactly how everyone else does it. It’s hard to bounce between the fine lines in life without someone questioning your actions are asking why you like to do things outside of the “normal” day-to-day activities.
While it is hard to keep up with what you like to do rather than listening to what others want you to do, it is the most important thing in life to be true to yourself. Don’t ever feel bad for liking or thinking a certain way. It doesn’t matter if you have 1,000,000 followers or just one, if you are happy then you have exceeded all expectations.
Have you ever heard a friend complain about something their parents make them do even though they don't want to or don't enjoy doing it? We hear this all the time of people doing things just to make others happy. Think in your own life, how much of the things that you do on a day-to-day basis is what you actually want to do?
There is one person, though, that you do have to make an exception to gain approval from: yourself. It doesn’t matter who agrees with your lifestyle, if you like who you are, then that is the most important aspect of your life.
It is inevitable that you will shed tears because you disappointed someone or you didn’t make someone happy or someone told you that they didn’t want to be with you anymore. There is no question that these things hurt us, but it’s what you do from there that makes you who you are.
It is a lot easier to pick up the pieces and gain strength from your situation rather than let others tear you down. It is an easier and happier life to love yourself first. Do you like you? Do you care what others think? These are important questions to ask yourself in order to find a true sense of your entire being.
So, don’t waste your life waiting to hear the feedback from others. Go with your gut instincts and make your life how you want to live, not how your mom, professor or significant other wants you to live it.
If you can make it through life seeking your happiness, and yours alone, then you will have ultimately succeeded.
