50 Thoughts Of A Girl Studying Abroad

Thoughts Prior to Leaving the United States:

1. Spanish food is like the same as Mexican food, right?

2. I wonder if there will be Chinese food in Spain.

3. I hope my host home will have Wi-Fi.

4. Is there Netflix abroad? If not, I don't think I'll be able to do this.

5. I can't wait to take a siesta every. Single. Day.

6. What if my roommate is weird?

7. What if my roommate thinks I’m weird?

8. If I change my name, no one would ever know...

9. I wonder if they’ll think I have an accent.

10. I hope the locals still speak English.

11. What if I accidentally offend someone because I can’t speak their language?

12. That's only happened one time...

13. Maybe I'll fall in love with an attractive Spaniard, or an Italian, or an Englishman? So many options. So many accents.

14. If I go to Rome, I'm definitely going to reenact The Lizzie McGuire movie.

15. Should I be afraid of eating the brownies in Amsterdam? #QTNA

16. I can't wait to post awesome Instagram photos.

17. I brought my selfie stick, are selfies allowed when you're in Europe?

Thoughts While Currently Living Abroad:

18. Spanish food is most definitely not the same as Mexican food.

19. Euros are so much cooler than USD. It's all blue and red and purple. It's like walking around with monopoly money with actual monetary value.

20. I miss Chick-fil-A.

21. And Chipotle.

22. And ice.

23. Why don't people in Europe put ice in their drinks? It's literally frozen water. It's not that hard.

24. Bread should count as a vegetable.

25. Why are there potatoes in literally everything?

26. Everyone here is so skinny. But they eat so much; I don’t understand.

27. Why didn’t anyone tell me siesta isn’t a thing in every part of Spain?

28. I'm going to take a siesta anyway.

29. Maybe I’ll start a petition to make siesta a thing in the United States.

30. Then maybe I could meet Obama.

31. Everyone loves Obama here, they even have bars named after him.

32. I want a bar named after me, or maybe a coffee shop would be better.

33. I hear Amsterdam has the best coffee shops.

34. I wonder what’s going on in the United States right now. Maybe I should watch the news.

35. The news is in Spanish, never mind.

36. I feel like everyone drinks wine more than water.

37. I now understand why Jesus turned water into wine.

38. I won't be 21 when I get back to the States. Europe is such a tease.

39. I should send my mom a picture of me studying right now so she thinks I'm being studious over here.

40. Good thing my grades transfer as pass or fail. C's get degrees, am I right?

41. Everyone here is so attractive.

42. It must be something in the water, yeah that's it. I should drink more water.

43. Wait, no one drinks water. That's not it.

44. I think I'll just get some gelato so I can eat my feelings.

45. Gelato makes everything better. Fact.

46. What if my friends don't remember me when I get back?

47. What if my study abroad friends forget about me when I get back?

48. I need more gelato and so I can eat my feelings again.

49. I'm not going to have any money to my name when I get back from buying food and plane tickets.

50. But hey, it was all worth it. #NoRegrets

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
