50 Things my parents taught me

Ah, finals are over, and I'm finally home! I think what I miss most during the school year is my parents. I know when I left New York City to go to school in Boston I was so excited to get away, but nothing can replace the feeling of warmth that comes with mom and dad. They never change their old ways and as I grow up, the words “you’ll understand when you get older” could never be truer. So here’s 50 things I’ve learned from mom and dad. I take some of them with a grain of salt.

1. Drink lots of water. - Dad

2. If it's a problem that money can solve, then it’s not that big of a problem.

3. If it doesn’t feel right, right away, don’t do it.

4. If you want to buy something but aren’t sure you want to spend the money, wait until next week and if you still want it then buy it. (Chances are, it’ll also be sold out, then you won’t spend any money at all)

5. Carry a water bottle wherever you go. - Dad

6. Put on your shoes first, then carry your bag.

7. Always buy insurance for expensive electronics.

8. Don’t skimp on good food and good shoes.

9. If you’re tired, go to sleep.

10. Towel down IN the shower.

11. If you’re hungry at night, eat fruit or drink a glass of milk.

12. Tell mom and dad everything.

13. Call home.

14. Buy, don’t rent.

15. Do your best, and don’t look back.

16. If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything. Even if the person isn’t around.

17. Family is forever.

18. Don’t put medicine in the bedroom or else you will get sick.

19. Fish are friends AND food. – Dad

20. Always develop your photos.

21. If you think you’ll forget something, write it down.

22. Never keep your sneezes in.

23. Better to be a little street smart than be all book smart.

24. If you can, save at least half your paycheck and don’t touch it.

25. Always give more than you take.

26. Drink water after you pee. – Dad

27. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. – Dad

28. Always unplug your charging devices after it has been appropriately charged. – Dad

29. Put up with bad managers – unless you’re the boss, there’s nothing you can do.

30. Admit when you’ve made a mistake.

31. Be aware of your surroundings.

32. Better to be up early and finish your work than to sleep in and be late.

33. Always be early.

34. Education is the only way up.

35. Be humble.

36. Laugh hard.

37. Reading and writing are therapeutic.

38. Believe your psychic. – Mom

39. If you arrange your furniture a certain way, you won’t get illness for the season. – Mom

40. You’re always gonna be their little baby.

41. Sleep on the floor when its hot. – Dad

42. If you throw out rice you can’t finish you’ll had bad luck. Pack it up and eat it tomorrow.

43. It’s okay if you don’t believe in a religion as long as you respect it.

44. Don’t be afraid/complain about work. You’re lucky to have it.

45. Do what you love.

46. You are loved.

47. Mom and dad will do anything for you.

48. Everything happens for a reason.

49. Drink lots of water. - Dad

50. Always come home.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
