50 Things I Want My Little Sisters To Know

As the oldest sister, I had to figure out a lot of things on my own. I was used as the guinea pig from my parents, and we all learned through a lot of trial and error. My four little sisters had a lot of things passed down to them through me, from tricks, to hand-me-down clothes, to makeup tips, so here are 50 little bits of wisdom I want to pass down to them as well:

1. Those models aren't the standard of beauty.

2. Pay attention in school and learn how to study early on.

3. Don't stress about grades too much. They're important, but not the most important thing.

4. Find your passion and stick to it.

5. Do stupid stuff sometimes. I guess I'll help bail you out and won't tell mom (most of the time).

6. Have fun with makeup, but don't depend on it. You still look good without it.

7. Learn from my mistakes. That's part of the reason why I made them.

8. Go out with your friends, but stay in and watch a movie with the family every once in awhile. You'll miss them when you're gone.

9. That boy really isn't worth it.

10. Don't be afraid of what people think. You won't know most of them in a few years anyways.

11. Don't try to grow up too fast. I swear it isn't as fun as you think it is.

12. Express yourself however you want. You know I'll help you dye your hair purple if I have to.

13. Put Nutella on everything. Don't worry about the calories.

14. But also remember to take care of yourself.

15. Don't stress over the little things. If it isn't important to your future, it probably isn't worth it.

16. Sometimes mom's right. But only sometimes.

17. That being said, don't be afraid to make your own decisions.

18. You don't have to do everything. Be busy, but not too busy. Leave time for you and don't overwhelm yourself.

19. Learn how to cook now so you don't have to rely on dinosaur nuggets and Easy Mac your whole life.

20. Take chances. Even if you fail, at least you tried.

21. Don't ever be ashamed of something you love.

22. Don't lower your standards for anyone.

23. Cut people off that are bringing you down. You don't owe anything to anyone.

24. But also try to be selfless. The more you help others, the happier you'll be.

25. Wear those sweatpants to class and don't feel self-conscious. Nobody actually cares.

26. But still take days to dress up and feel hot.

27. Ask me questions. I've been through this stuff and figured it out so you don't have to.

28. Push yourself to your limits, but only to there. You won't help yourself if you break yourself.

29. Your butt really doesn't look fat in those jeans. Trust me, I'd tell you if they did.

30. Don't be too big to say you're sorry.

31. But don't apologize for doing the right thing.

32. Don't think any dreams are too big. Shoot for what you want and we'll figure out how to get you there.

33. Don't put your relationship with anyone else over your relationship with God.

34. You can't ever have too much glitter.

35. Mom and dad can't hold your hand for the rest of your life, so learn how to do things on your own.

36. But don't be afraid to ask for help and advice.

37. Surround yourself with positivity.

38. Don't take my tough love as me hating you.

39. You don't have to have everything figured out. You have plenty of time.

40. Except for when you don't. So don't procrastinate too much.

41. You don't have to do something every weekend.

42. But get out of the house sometimes. Netflix will be there when you get back.

43. Think about the effects of your choices before you make them.

44. Look at all of your options, even the crazy ones, before you make decisions.

45. I really am here to help.

46. Don't be afraid of a good winged eyeliner and red lipstick.

47. Don't waste your time on stupid guys. You deserve better. It's better to be alone than with the wrong person.

48. Know when to let things go.

49. I will always be your best friend.

50. I love you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
