Spring semester begins January 8th and, as a senior, I am having a hard time wanting to go back to class. I know I’m not the only one feeling this strain as the days count down. With Fall semester feeling like it just ended yesterday and the increasingly cold temperatures we’re facing, it’s hard to find the motivation you’ll need to succeed in the coming months. So, to make the return easier, here are 5 ways to keep yourself motivated this Spring semester.

1. Find one thing about each class to look forward to

Whether it’s an amazing professor or a section you’re excited to learn more about, finding a reason to enjoy each of your classes will increase your motivation to attend class and to study and get those amazing grades throughout the semester.

2. Designate Rewards

Sometimes you have to take classes you can’t stand or classes that are extremely difficult. It’s hard to make yourself focus on these classes when you don’t enjoy anything about them. For each class you’re having difficulty with, assign yourself a reward. Whether it be watching a movie on Netflix or letting yourself eat that “special occasion” treat, set aside one thing to treat yourself with after each study session, completed assignment, or good grade.

3. Organize your planner

Being organized and prepared can make you excited and more successful in any situation. It’s easy to lose track of what needs to be done. By organizing your planner and keeping your schedules aligned, you’re sure to never run out of time and always stay on top of all of your responsibilities.

4. Plan ahead

When the semester starts, take a good hard look at each syllabus. Find the assignments that will count for most of your grade and section off parts of it to work on each week until it’s due. By doing this you will keep yourself from being overwhelmed when the due date pops up around the corner.

5. Give yourself free time

Whether you have all of your assignments done or not, all work and no play will become old real fast. Set aside some free time. It could be a weekend out with friends or family, a movie night at home, or an extra special night out for just yourself. No matter what you decide to do, make sure you make time for yourself and your mental health.

Procrastination and lack of motivation can feel inevitable, but with a little guidance and advice you can keep yourself from falling behind. Happy Spring semester! Here’s to hoping the good grades and warm weather comes rolling in soon.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
