5 Ways to Overcome Winter Break Boredom
Kayla Koch

Winter break is a glorious, carefree time for college students. However, due to the length of the break, students sometimes find themselves wishing to go back to school and back to their friends. Here are five ways to cast away potential winter break boredom.

1. Pick up more hours at work.

Not only will picking up more hours at work keep you busy, it will also fill your wallet with a bit of fun spending money for when you resume your normal academic schedule.

2. Craft study playlists on Spotify for the upcoming semester.

For quite a few students, music is of utmost importance when it comes to academic excellence and the pursuit towards a 4.0. New music spices up studying and if you have time, playlists can be perfected for the busy academic semester ahead.

3. Read a recommended book.

There are countless amounts of times during a semester when a book will be recommended to you and you will knowingly realize that there is no way you will be reading that book anytime soon. See if you can remember one of the recommended books from the semester's conversations and read it. (Hint hint: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is a doozy.)

4. Grab a friend and get outside.

Being home for the holidays means friends from high school will soon be returning home from other colleges as well. Living in Arizona, we barely get a winter season, so grab a friend and get outside. Catch up and go for a hike while enjoying the borderline autumn/winter air. Hiking doesn't even have to be an option- you could simply go for a picnic. Catching up with friends can most definitely be done by enjoying fresh air.

5. Pick up a new hobby.

During the semester, there is hardly time to breathe let alone pick up a new hobby. Allow yourself to discover what truly catches your interest with the abundance of time on your hands. Take a walk with flip flops on through puddles, grab a camera and snap some quick shots of your neighborhood and all that calls it home, get outside, do something you wouldn't normally do and make regular pattern of doing so. Anything can become a hobby.

Take this break to allow yourself to relax and discover another puzzle piece or two about yourself that makes you you. Have a great holiday season and break from the stresses of academic life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
