5 Ways To Get Into The Christmas Spirit

Each December, the holiday season comes flying into us all so hard we almost stumble over. As a college student, we are flooded with so many demands, it can be hard to keep up. From exams, finding a job or internship, maintaining a social life, and just everyday tasks, it can be hard to get yourself into the season spirits.

Here are five easy ideas to help get you into the holiday spirits this season!

1. Read "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens.

It doesn't even necessarily have to be this book. It can be something as simple as reading "A night before Christmas..." that can help get you back into the spirits. Starting Dec. 1, it's the perfect amount of time to dive into any holiday book that might help you get excited for this season!

2. Have a "Santa Clause" movie marathon.

There are three of these that you can definitely binge out to! You can also go for a classic favorite, "The Grinch." What more could you need to help get you into the spirits than your favorite Christmas movie? There are also shows that you can watch which may even become a Christmas tradition. On a recent trip to Ireland, I discovered a show called, "The Toy Show," where kids review toys to help give parents an idea of what to and what not to buy this season!

3. Make DIY presents.

Whether you have the money or not to buy all the presents you need for this year (but I'm guessing most of you are like me who are broke college students), making DIY presents can be both fun for you and present a more thoughtful gift for your loved ones. There are tons of ideas on Pinterest and Youtube to help you choose what is best suited for you tastes and style. An all time classic are the cookie mix or hot cocoa mix mugs. Buy some mason jars at target and fill them up with all the ingredients you would need to make these and attach a cute tag around the lid.

4. Turn on the Christmas radio station.

If anyone else is from NOVA (represent), then you know 97.1 with Delilah. She may not be your most favorite person in the world, but she definitely knows how to keep the Christmas spirit alive! Find a radio station that's filled with your favorite mix of holiday songs and jam out while you're in the car. Bonus: If you're taking a road trip home soon with friends, play a "guess that song" game where whoever guesses the song before the first words are spoken, wins.

5. Have a holiday party with your family and friends.

Holiday parties can go either way -- really great or dreadfully dull. Turn it around this year with a goofy holiday party. Require everyone to wear their tackiest sweaters, craziest socks, and best head gear (Rudolph nose, antlers, Santa hat). Set up a photo booth to take some crazy photos and keep the memories living forever. You can even go a step further and make all the food Christmas themed, like Christmas cookies, red and green jell-o, etc. Most importantly, make sure to enjoy spending the time with your loved ones this season.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
