1. Organize a planner
Buying a planner was the best decision of my college career. It allows me to plan my school, work, and extracurricular life out days, weeks, and even months ahead of time. Because of my planner, I have never missed a deadline on an assignment or felt unprepared for an exam. Being able to keep up with the madness that college is helps you feel ready for school, and gives you time to have fun as well!
2. Realistically plan your days
One of the keys to being successful in college is being realistic. Don't put tasks on your plate that you can't handle. Plan to study and complete your assignments throughout the week instead of cramming everything in on a Sunday. By planning out when you're going to study and complete your assignments in a realistic manner, you won't be stressed out because of procrastination. For example, if you know you have a lot of social events on the weekend, try to complete your assignments by Thursday night so that you are stress-free for the weekend! There is no better feeling that being prepared.
3. Use colored pens when taking notes for class
Personally, I color-code virtually everything possible. Although it takes a bit more time and organization, studies have shown that using colored pens and pencils while taking notes for class helps you memorize the information easier. Writing out notes by hand also helps you memorize the information easier, although it is more work than taking them on your laptop.
4. Have a hobby or activity to work on when you're stressed about school
And no, that doesn't mean going to a party. It means having an activity that keeps you busy and helps you grow positively as an individual. There are plenty of ways to do this, such as getting involved with a club, organization, or volunteer opportunity. It could even be a job on campus that takes your mind away from school work for a bit! This could also include taking up photography, sports, or becoming a Content Creator for the Odyssey ;)
5. Learn how to manage your time properly
Time management is essential to being a successful and productive college student. There is always something going on, whether it's a work, school, or social commitment. It's extremely important to space yourself out evenly, and find a balance between your responsibilities. Although it is difficult to find that perfect balance and keep everyone around you happy; don't stress yourself out over perfection. You may not 4.0 every exam, you might be late to work once, and you will most definitely have to miss out on a few parties. Keep your priorities straight and don't let yourself fall into the hands of procrastination! It is one of the best things you can do for yourself to ensure that you enjoy your time at college, while also being successful. Good luck!
