1. Don't go home.
Although it can feel overwhelming at first, staying on campus is the fastest way to become acclimated. The more you stick around, the more people you will meet, and the more confident you'll be.
2. Don't be afraid to reach out.
You're not the only one who’s nervous or homesick! Introduce yourself to your floormates, ask a neighbor to go to dinner, or find a club to sit in on. However trite the saying, it's true that everyone is in the same boat. If need be, CAPS offers mental health services -- everything from group sessions to one-on-one.
3. Talk to your professors.
They're people, just like us. The important thing to remember is that they want you to succeed. If you have questions or think you might need extra help, ask. That's what they're there for!
4. Explore.
Take a walk outside, wander around your building, or scope out somewhere quiet to study. You'll be glad that you did! Not only is it helpful to know your way around, but it's also nice to find a spot to escape to when your roommate is (inevitably) being noisy.
5. Give it time.
Before you know it, you'll be caught up in work, friends, and writing papers. Things might feel rough now, but once you ride it out, you'll be glad that you did!
