Gilmore Girls; we’ve loved them since we met them back in 2000, new generations have met them through binge watching on Netflix, and we were beyond excited for this year’s four-part revival.
We are all honorary Gilmore Girls. In some ways, the show has been there for us just as we’ve been there through every up and down in Rory and Lorelai’s lives. The show has this sense of reality to it. It’s simple, it’s about relationships, and we can connect to it because it’s honest. So many TV shows strive to be grand and complex, but the beauty of Gilmore Girls is its transparency that is shown through quick dialogue and its ability to give us a slice of life.
We could further connect to the show through the ways in which we relate to Rory Gilmore. Growing up I looked up to Rory for her brains, confidence, and kindness. Watching her in this year’s Netflix revival I realized that Rory isn’t so different from what most women my age are like.
1. Rory Still Needs Her Mom
When I was younger I thought there would be a day where I’d have all of the answers to life. I’m supposed to have a hang of things now, but I don’t. I still run to my mom when I’m in trouble, I always ask for her opinions, she’s my go to when I need a quick laugh, and when I need someone to set me straight. When we see Rory in her 30’s it’s clear that she still relies heavily on Lorelai. She proves that it’s okay to always need our mothers regardless of our age
2. Rory Kind Of Has A Plan
The last time we saw Rory she was off on the campaign trail, she was going to be this amazing journalist. She can still be a journalist. However, she isn’t there yet and this was refreshing to see. Numerous times young women such as myself have set goals and have planned out every detail on how to get there. The reality is that plans are not set in stone and being lost is okay. As long we keep trying we will get on the path that we are supposed to be on
3. Rory Doesn’t Know Where Her Underwear Is
We are busy gals nowadays. While we have so much going for us and try to be in 50 places at once we are bound to drop the ball on a few things. We just have to remember to not to sweat the small stuff.
4. Rory Doesn’t Want To Be In Stars Hollow Anymore
Our beloved hometowns, they made us who we are today and prepared us for the real world. The last thing that we want to do is return home to live without accomplishments. We want to be living the lives we imagined as young girls when we lived in these small hometowns. We all love Stars Hollow, but there is so much that we need to achieve before we return to our old stomping grounds. We aren’t supposed to be content, it’s ideal that we always desire more in order to live fulfilling lives.
5. Rory Goes Back To Logan Time After Time
We all have a Logan, don’t we? The person that we can’t seem to shake, whether it’s because we can’t let go of the past, because we want him to be “the one,” because we don’t want to go through the trouble of meeting someone new? Sometimes it’s difficult to figure out how long we are supposed to keep certain people in our lives. Trial and error may at times be the best way of realizing whom we should keep.
Rory Gilmore isn’t this perfect 21st-century young woman that I once thought she was; and, I love her for it. Rory’s imperfect TV life is a spot on reflection of the lives that many of us live.
