It might be just a week or so before the start of the fall term but I can already feel the pre-university jitters set in. Am I going to be able to handle the course load, all of my extracurriculars, a social life and have time to sleep? With the overwhelming sense of responsibility comes the crushing thought of, "Why bother?"
I'm sure we've all felt it at some point. Why get out of bed and start a 10 page paper when you could stay in your blanket cocoon and press "next episode" on Netflix? Well, as much as we may gripe and complain, sometimes we have to put on our big adult pants and get our sh*t done. Here are some ways to get yourself re-motivated.
1. Shower
Whenever I'm feeling in a funk or feeling gross I hop in the shower! I don't know if it's physical or in my head, but it never fails to reset my mindset and clear any yucky mood I'd been in. Grab your favorite soap, crank up the tunes and wash the stress away!
2. Comfy Clothes
Shorts and a t-shirt, pajamas or a sundress. Where whatever makes you feel powerful and put together. But make sure to dress for the weather! You may feel like you're on top of the world in a tank top; but if it's winter, you're going to feel under the weather in no time!
3. Accountability Buddy
Text a friend. Call your mother. Post on Facebook. Tweet to your followers on Twitter. Let someone know what you're planning to get done so you can't fall back on it! In the same sense as a workout buddy, an accountability buddy can keep you on track to reach your academic goals!
4. Pomodoro Technique
This method of time management is proven to be the most efficient when getting tasks done! I use this, especially when exam season rolls around. Named after the Italian word for tomato, the Pomodoro Technique splits work time into 25 minute blocks separated by 5 minute breaks. After four working time blocks, take a longer break of 15-20 minutes! This will avoid burnout.
5. Reward Yourself
When you finish your task, reward yourself! Watch an episode of your favorite television show, hangout with your friends, bake treats or read a new book. Thank yourself and your brain for all your hard work!
