College is not what everyone says it is. However, one thing is clear: college is what you make it. Going to college shy can feel and is pretty intimidating at first, especially when you know nobody there. So, if you're like me and are going to college nervous, afraid, and completely in the blind, here are some ideas that could help cope with the anxiety, particularly if you are shy.
1. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
As the old saying goes, "Asking questions may make you look stupid, but not asking them is even stupider." There are going to be times where you're completely lost on campus and have no idea what to do. Even I still do sometimes. You are going to have to ask for help sometimes. Believe it or not, people respond to politeness with respect. You're going to be confused. I guarantee it.
2. Visit your Professor's office hours
Honestly, the only reason I've done somewhat well in class was because of office hours. Remember, you're in college to get an education first. Many professors will be very appreciative when you walk up to them and introduce yourself. Not only will your grades improve, but now you have a great source for recommendation letters when time comes. Trust me they will, and your professors will come in clutch.
3. Have Purpose When Trying New Things
Many people will say try new things, but the key point in doing so is to have the right reasons why. Doing something just for the sake of doing it isn't the right purpose. Do things because you want to not because someone pressured you to. If you don't want to do it, then don't do it. If you want to do it, do it. The people who say that college was the best four years of their lives only did things they truly wanted to do. Of course, education will make you stressed out, but that stress just makes the things you want to do better.
4. Keep in Touch With Friends From Home
Given how advanced communications are, it's so easy to talk to anyone. Why not keep in touch with all your friends you may have said goodbye to? College is so much easier with someone to talk to at any time during the day. It's gotten me through some stressful times, and I'm sure it will for you too.
5. Don't Do Anything Too Stupid
You only have four years and maybe then some, but even so, always be aware of your surroundings and what you're doing. Not all things are what they seem even after a while. You're going to do stupid things like lose your phone or miss a deadline, but the stupidest things put the safety of others and yourself at risk. Even as a shy kid, there are people who still love you. Don't let them down by letting yourself down.
College is truly what you make it, no matter who you are and where you come from. Good luck, stay true to yourself, and you'll be fine.
