Although college students are older than high school students, some habits never change when transitioning to college. If you are in college, you most likely have seen a couple of these traits on campus and can relate.

1. Packing Before Class Ends

In High School, before the bell rang everyone would pack their bags 10 or 5 minutes earlier but in college everyone packs their bags 15 minutes before the class ends. I witnessed this the other day during my Woman Gender Studies course, as I was taking notes I began to hear rattling, books slamming, and bags being zipped up. For some reason I felt confused and upset, confused because there was still 15 minutes and the lesson taught was still going on and upset because I couldn’t concentrate with everyone packing up which made me feel rushed. In high school everyone rushes to get out because they want to hang with their friends but for some reason college, students rather do other things than be in class, which is the reason as to why they pack 15 minutes earlier.

2. Asking Parents For Money

Even though college is our home away from home, we still rely on our parents financially even if it is just a weekly allowance and in college every student can use some extra money. At first I believed that it was rare for many students to still ask their parents for money in college because of work study, loans or having a job while still being a full time student. Even though that may be the case for a few, some students still call their parents up for at least $20 every two weeks to go out or treat themselves to a good meal off campus.

3. Eating During Class

The good thing about high school is that breakfast and lunch are always served during specific times of the day but for college students we have to find time within our schedules. Some students are more occupied than others and don’t really have time to eat so they eat in class.

4. Giving Professors Long Explanations For Not Doing An Assignment

A student can get away with a lot of things in high school, especially when it comes to making up an assignment. Unfortunately it is not the same in college, some students write a long paragraph explaining why they couldn’t do an assignment or attempt to request for a make-up with a penalty but it is way harder to convince a professor. Some professors are strict and stick with their policies but there are also some professors who are understanding and lenient but it’s not as simple as in high school.

5. Leaving Bathrooms Dirty

Every time I entered the bathroom in my younger days it would always be dirty. Toilet paper everywhere, some un-flushed toilets, and paper towels around the garbage bin. College bathrooms aren’t as bad as high school bathrooms but there will still be people who leave some stalls dirty.

College and High School are two different environments but some things never change, but it does not necessarily mean it’s a bad thing. Some habits don’t change without us realizing. Carrying old high school habits expresses our comfortability and younger self’s.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
