As I grew up thinking about college my whole life, I never realized what it would actually be like. I thought it would be so nice having breaks in between my classes and time to take naps in the middle of the day. The first week is a breeze. You think, yeah I can do this, it's not so bad. Then, you quickly realize that it is much different when that first quiz or test slaps you right across the face.
1) Use the Library
The library is the most effective part of completing college. I learned very quickly that doing homework in your room does not work very well. Especially with the taunting forces of; Netflix, YouTube, snacks, and video games constantly bugging you. The library provides a great place to study in peace and quiet while enjoying a coffee.
2) Learn to Love Coffee
Put down the Red Bull and Mountain Dew! Coffee is an excellent alternative that gives you all the energy and very little crash. There have been many nights where I have stayed up 'til 2:00 a.m. with coffee in my hand just to study for the quiz the next day. Coffee is an essential when it comes to late night studying and early morning class, that few college students could live without.
3) Attend Campus Events
Many great memories of college happen right on campus with people you have never talked to before. Never be afraid to hangout with new people, no matter how nerve-racking it may be. College is the time to meet new people; so don't seclude yourself to the dorm. Some of these events include concerts, sports games, poetry readings, seminars, and dances. These events are fun alone, but it is very unlikely you will leave without making a couple friends.
4) Utilize Campus Resources
There are so many resources out there that you can use to make the best out of yourself. If you are struggling in the class; there are help desks and tutors. Don't be embarrassed to get help. I can guarantee that every college student has been there several times during their college career. If you are bored, use the gym. Don't let the freshman fifteen get to you! The gym is a great way to spend your free time. What is better than feeling your body get healthier while enjoying your time, either by yourself or with your friends?
5) Go to Office Hours
This is the time where professors set aside time to have one-on-one time with students. If the help desk isn't working for you or if you feel more comfortable talking to your teacher, this is for you. There is a very limited office hours space, so have to plan very carefully when to go. You're professor is not the enemy! Not only can you learn more; you can also score some brownie points by going to them instead of the help desk.
By following this list, you will be guaranteed to successfully complete college. Never procrastinate and remember that this is the time to have fun; so don't let homework consume you, keep your stress level low, and have some time for yourself too.
