With such a rise in technological advances within the past decade, the question has arose as to whether libraries will eventually become obsolete? Having grown up with libraries being a major part of my childhood, I find this idea rather far-fetched. There’s nothing like discovering a new book, holding it in your hands, and knowing that it’s been read and loved time and time before. For students, libraries are a study haven. However, libraries are for more than just this. Here is a list of five unusually fun things to do at libraries that you might not have thought of before.
1. Rent a movie, for free
Gone are the days when kids flocked to the movie rental store on a Friday night. Alas, if you are tired of Netflix selections, and ready for a heavy dose of nostalgia, why not browse the movie section at your local library? It’s not quite like Blockbuster. New releases are few and far between, and you can’t buy Twizzlers and Sour Patch Kids at the checkout, but browsing DVDs at the library is the next best thing.
2. Discover some weird music
I’ve never actually proven this theory, but from what I can tell, library music is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Still, at the bottom of that barrel lie some strange, unknown gems. I can only imagine what my parents thought passing by my room listening to me blast “Why Am I a Rastaman?” or the work of Itzhak Perlman.3. Schedule a blind date with literature
I like to play a game of book roulette. Pick a random book without paying attention to the cover. Read a few pages and see if it strikes your fancy. You never know what interesting things you might find.
4. People watching
Any time I see large groups of people together, it’s always interesting to just sit back and observe. What brought such a group of diverse people together? Zoom in on each of them. What is their story? What are their dreams? What are their fears? It breeds some great character inspiration to try and analyze real-life characters from a seemingly blank canvas.
5. Learn something new
There are many classes available at libraries for a variety of subjects. Check out the calendar at your local library to see if anything piques your interest! It’s a great way to learn something new, while meeting people with common interests.
