Are you looking for a new hobby? Something to not only entertain you but helpful for your daily life? While there are many hobbies out there that can capture your interest, such as stamp collecting and antiquing do they really prove to be helpful in your life? Here is a list of five hobbies that can help improve your life, if you chose to take them up!

1. Knitting

You know that thing Grandma is known for doing! It is not just for the older folk, although they did have a head start on it! Knitting is great for the beginner to advance knitter because you are able to create anything from an easy scarf to a really cute animal for a baby by learning a few basic stitches. Hey, you are creating useful items like clothes, blankets, and more importantly toys!

2. Drawing

Okay, this might be a bit harder to see but trust me when I say being able to draw even at a basic level is helpful. This might require you to either work or like other activities, but hey it is useful! Such as drawing a map. I have given so many directions, turn left onto Main street then go down two blocks to C street- and still people get lost. However most people are visual people, so draw a map and suddenly you have a goldmine of information. Here is also the fact that drawing free hand, or just coloring (inside or outside the lines) is a relaxing activity for many people. So if you have a high level of stress in your life break out the crayons! This might be a very useful hobby for you!

3. keep a Journal

Keeping a Journal has been found to help improve people's mood and help improve performance. It is a great activity if you need help organizing your life or want to record life events for yourself or future generations. Bullet Journals are popular currently and focus on helping people achieve life goals and improving physical and mental heath.

4. BookBinding

If you ever find you need to create a book, do not just wait for a publisher to come pick it up! Create your own book print it out and bind it. You are now a published author! This might not seem like a useful activity, but if you are anything like me you will eventually need to learn this skill. I go through many journals and notebooks, and when you like bindings that reflect your personality and work it can get a bit expensive. So learning helps your budget, but is also a great gift idea! People love personalized items, and a book or a journal is a perfect way to show you care about them. Either by showing how much you want them to express their lovely selves in a personal journal or by showing them a book you created just for them.

5. Reading

Many people will never pick up another book after high school- and even more after college. Even though libraries are one of the greatest weapons in the world, very few take advantage of their knowledge. If you can get down to your local library, many offer kindles, library borrowing (where you can request books from other libraries if yours does not carry the book), and endless events to help bring books into the community. Do not waste time, pick up this hobby and learn how to create and do new and wonderful things! Such as knitting to draw? This activity allows you to take up more than one useful hobby at once- great for someone who wants to know a little about everything.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
