In this cinematic era of superhero films, there's a lot of choices to choose for the greatest amongst them. We know the big-name ones. But there are some that fly under the radar with rather negative reviews, for which I have decided to talk about, that are rather good. People will probably disagree, but they're entitled to their opinion, even if it's wrong.
5. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
I enjoyed this film. I know it gets a bad rap, but it was pretty damn enjoyable. If not only because it focuses on Wolverine, my favorite X-Man. People talk about how it strays very far away from the source material, but what do you expect? A complete clone of the comic books? I kind of like how they introduced bone claws, for example. It made for more sense why he was able to have Adamantium claws afterwards. Plus, Sabertooth was way, WAY cooler than in the first X-Men. Even Deadpool had an interesting new take on his origin. Now obviously, I wouldn't want this to overtake the original Marvel universe, but it definitely can't be shunned just because it's not exactly what Marvel originally wrote.
4. "Watchmen"
This one is great because of how beautiful it looks and how it really captures the dark essence of Watchmen. The opening scene is phenomenal, able to capture so much story in such a little span of time. Of course, Rorschach gave a great performance, and it stayed true to the comic. I actually don't see why this one doesn't get more praise, honestly.
3. "Captain America: The First Avenger"
Captain America is one of my favorite Marvel superheroes. Just because of the concept of him. Superhero made from steroids and a shield as a projectile weapon? Amazing. Plus, I like historical fiction, especially set during World War II. Overall, it was kind of a stupid film with explosions and plot devices that don't make sense, but who cares? Isn't that what movies are supposed to do sometimes?
2. "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice"
I don't see why this movie got a much lower rating than Man of Steel did. This was far and away better than the first movie. Ben Affleck surprised me with a great performance, one able to compete with Christian Bale's, and we actually got to see that Superman's destruction in the previous film had some consequences. Other films show a huge fight scene that destroys so much, but it was all addressed in this movie. Plus there's Wonder Woman and other Justice League member cameos. What bugged me was that Batman killed people, which is supposed to be his defining rule. So, that lost points there.
1. "The Dark Knight Rises"
"The Dark Knight Rises" had a lot to live up to from its predecessor, "The Dark Knight." But they played off the high stakes in the film. A nuke about to destroy all of Gotham City? That's heavy. It's just that you could've watched this film without even watching "The Dark Knight" at all. It was a great end to the series, though. It had a good balance of "this is the end" and "this is just the beginning." Everything wraps up nicely, with Batman retiring with Catwoman, Alfred finally seeing Bruce live peacefully, Robin inheriting the Batcave...it was pretty damn moving for a film about a guy dressed in a bat costume.
