5 Things That Make A UC Riverside Student Smile During Week 1

Why can't every week be like this?

UCR Today

On this beautiful Friday, I would like to say goodbye to one of the best weeks of the quarter. To commemorate the first week back at school, for UC Riverside students, I thought I would point out just a few of the perks of the first week. Because they are way different than semester schools have.

1. Only going over the syllabus at the first lecture

Unlike schools on the semester system, those of us on the quarter system do not get a “syllabus week”. (We can sure hope for one though…) So when our classes are cut short because we are only going over the syllabus during the first lecture and are not doing anything demanding on other days in order to allow others to purchase the textbook, we can only be thankful.

2. Seeing cancelled classes on the syllabus

This is one of the best things by far because, in my case, I’m already counting how many more hours of sleep I'm going to have that night.

3. Finding out that you have a friend in your class

After switching into my current major, I realized that everyone knows each other. And it can be kinda weird walking into a class of only 15 people (Workshops, I’m talking about you) that you don’t know. But knowing at least one person makes it a little easier to adjust to the class. Plus, why wouldn’t you want a friend to complain to about the class. Because we all know that makes it way more fun

4. Being able to find a nice spot at the HUB

The HUB is a wonderful place to get lunch, hang out with friends and do some work. And only for this brief moment in time, there is space to sit. But you can forget about it next week because tables will always be filled.

5. Finding parking

As a commuter, this is the best thing. After spring break, no one wants to be back on campus. So everyone leaves as soon as they can and only come when they need to. So for this week only, I’ve learned to appreciate the vast amount of parking that is avail. Oh, how I’ll miss it…

And just like that, week one is over. The hustle and bustle of the quickest and busiest quarter will soon overtake us. RIP to us because I think we all know we won’t be sleeping. I’ll see all of you in the summer after finals have passed and I have slept.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
