The zombie apocalypse is inevitable, but your survival is not. Having the right gear, mental preparation, and general know-how can be the difference between being alive and being a snack for the undead. These tips acquired by tried and true methods of other successful survivors can help you be prepared for the worst.
1. One swing, one kill.
A relentless goal won't give you another chance once it gets within melee distance. More importantly, they won't be phased if it's an indirect hit, considering the dead don't feel pain. Whatever weapon you choose, make you can make it capable of destroying the zombies brain with one decisive strike. Whether it's a machete or a crowbar, let your aim be true and dispatch the target with efficiency.
2. Maintain a low profile.
The dead can be more perceptive than one would guess from their general stupor. Being aware of your party and your surroundings will help you avoid trouble in more ways than one. If communication is necessary, as it often is, talk in a low, quiet voice to keep it from traveling further than needed. If even one zombie detects you, his friends are likely soon to be alerted. Keep light sources isolated, and avoid any congested areas that could spell trouble.
3. Take the path of least resistance.
You never know what kind of problems you'll run into on the way. If you optimize your teams strengths according to whatever challenges you face, it can save precious time and resources for whatever challenges lay beyond. Scout out as many options as possible so you can make an informed call before you pass the point of no return.
4. Don't get bit.
It seems self explanatory, but this is literally the worst thing that can happen. Seriously, the importance of not getting bit cannot be expressed enough. Not only will your life succumb to the virus but your body will join the ranks of the undead. Don't make your friends face the pain of dealing with your reanimated corpse.
5. Take the initiative and maintain momentum.
The dead don't get tired, and they always seem to show up when people get too comfortable. Staying one step ahead of the hoard is a full time job, don't be caught off guard by it. The dynamic is similar to Aesop's fable of the tourtise and the hare. As the living, we tend to fast and clever, but need to recuperate at one point or another. The dead, though slow and disjointed, are relentless and can endure conditions that would end us. Sweep an outbreak zone several times over before you even consider trusting it. The enemy's only function is to perpetuate the sickness by feeding on the living. Your purpose as a survivor is to make sure the undead don't consume what makes you human.
