Staying organize in college and managing your time can be some of the hardest things to do in college, but a few key things can help you stay on track and have the most stress-free year. Here are a few ideas to keep your semester on track, benefiting your health, grades, and social life.
1. Planner
The first thing you need is a planner, and not only do you need a good planner, but you have to use it. Seriously, take it everywhere and use it. Write down all your events, activities, homework, social schedules, and appointments. If you are into working out on a routine schedule make sure to add your workouts into your planner. Don't forget to include time for the things you like to do and not just all the "boring" things you have to do. I recommend color coding each entry to differentiate from homework, social, appointments, etc. I have also found it beneficial to make an entry of your assignments listed in your syllabus at the beginning of a semester. Doing so will help you remember all your assignments.
2. Calendar
If you are like me, in addition to a well-planned out planner you will also need some form of calendar. A calendar, whether it be a dry erase board or desk calendar, it always helps me to visually see what my week or month looks like. This helps when trying to schedule activities in your already busy schedule.
3. Procrastination
This is probably one of the worst things you can do to screw up your time management. By getting things done beforehand and efficiently you can save yourself tons of time later, including possibly going to that date party or not feeling bad for spending all night talking with friends instead of doing your homework. You also get a great sense of accomplishment and reduce your stress levels.
4. Free Time
Yes, it is acceptable to take a little time for yourself. Sometimes you need a break or de-stress. No matter how you choose to do this whether it be working out, binge watching Netflix, or spending time with your friends, everyone needs a little time to unwind and have fun.
5. Priorities
By having your priorities straight you can really get a lot accomplished. One of the main problems with time management is your priorities. I can't stand it when someone says they have no time but can sleep their Saturday away like it is nothing. The key to staying on track is keeping your priorities in line. Not saying you have to write these down, just that it is good to keep a mental note of what is most important to where you are in life and what comes second and third. Doing so will keep you in check and not let the "unimportant things" override the "important things," whatever they may be in your life.
Hopefully these tips can lead you to a successful semester and create positive habits in your everyday lives.
