It is the end of the semester. You just returned from Thanksgiving break where relatives probably encouraged you to do well in the remaining weeks of the semester, and gushed to your parents about how they “just cannot believe how much she’s grown!” You were probably told, “finish your semester strong, sweetie!” at least fifteen times. Over Thanksgiving break, this seemed like excellent advice. You nodded and smiled when your father patted you on the back and told you to “finish strong and do your best!” Of course I’ll finish strong, you thought. This is going to be great.
Now, you are a week into the last three weeks of the semester. You are drowning in final papers, exams, speeches, and projects. Everything seems to be due all at the same time, and everything is worth a significant percentage of your final grade. You spend nights without sleep and when you do manage to close your eyes for a few hours you toss and turn. Everyone around you seems to be constantly on the verge of tears, and even professors have started remarking on the class' lack of enthusiasm. So, what do you do? Here are five tips I have that will help you survive the last few days of your semester….
1. Decorate Your Room
It is the holiday season! Turn on some music, and spend an hour stringing up sparkling lights. After Thanksgiving break, my incredible roommate brought back a tiny Christmas tree for our room. We have it plugged in while we work, and looking at the light reminds me that winter break is nearly here. You don't have to get a tree, but maybe you could write a winter break count down and stick it on your dorm room door. Do a little something to brighten the mood of your room.
2. Get Help From Others
As someone who works in the Writing Center, I may be slightly biased in this regard, but I truly do believe that now more than ever is the time to utilize the resources available to you. Go to the Writing Center and get help with your final papers. Form a study group with class mates and start making study guides for your final. Talk to someone in the Learning Center if you need help managing your time. Go to your professor's office hours if you need help. Use your resources. People are here to help.
3. Breathe
Inhale, exhale. Do it often. You are going to survive these next two weeks.
4. Spend Some Time With Your Friends
I know that finals time is crazy and everyone is stressed, but taking an hour or two to relax with your friends is important. Exchange simple holiday gifts. Watch silly videos. Make a gingerbread house. Do something that is not studying for a little while to give your mind time to relax.
5. Plan Out Your Time
Make a list of everything that you have to do. Plan out your time hour by hour, ensuring time for sleep and meals. Set deadlines for yourself before assignments are actually due. Hold yourself accountable. You can do this.
I know that your relatives told you to “finish strong!” after Thanksgiving and you feel overwhelmed and terrified in the face of everything that you have to do. That is okay. That is normal. Remember to breathe through it. Remember these five things I just told you.
I am proud of you
You've made it this far.
Winter break is just days away.
Good luck.
