It’s now summer, and for your average college student, it is time to start building on your résumé. One good way to do that is to apply for internships within the student’s particular field of study. Internships allow a person to get on the inside of things and learn what it’s like to be working the particular kind of job.
I myself am currently interning for an independent professional baseball team in my hometown this summer. I’ve learned within the first week on the job just what interns really do.
So to be prepared for what an internship brings, here are these five tips to remember so that the experience is a good one.
1. Be prepared to do odd jobs
Interns are the bottoms of the barrel. They do the grunt work: go get food, run copies, clean up after everybody, and so on. While you may be there for a different purpose, it’s a learning experience to understand how everything operates within that setting. So while you may not have expected it, just go with it and do it with a good attitude.
2. Be open for whatever comes your way
Every day brings a new experience because you usually never get the same job twice. Always be flexible and open because it's all part of learning what it takes in the field.
3. Have a good attitude
Pretty self-explanatory; even if you are stuck with the lowest of the low when it comes to duties, do it the best that you can. Having a good attitude towards any job you're doing will reflect well on you with your superiors.
4. Connections, connections, connections
You never know whom you might meet. It could be someone who can put a good word in for you when applying for a job.
5. Have fun
You’re doing something that you want to do. Have fun with it. It may not be what you thought, but it’s a way to get into the Wild Wild West that is the job market.
All in all, internships are a very good way to get some valuable experience and make connections in the field you want to enter. Take advantage of every opportunity because it may get you somewhere bigger than you thought of.
