Spoiler Alert: There are spoilers for both early and recent seasons in this article.
I know what you’re thinking, You like "Family Guy"?
Indeed I do. I don’t know how it happened, but one day I decided to watch an episode. That led to watching the entirety of the series, and since it’s on Netflix, I am semi-proud to say that I’ve watched all the available episodes more than once. Yes, at times it can be a little over-done and crude, but I have a sense of humor that finds it funny. I can also appreciate the times that it did more than simply make me laugh. Every once and a while, the show churns out a lesson worth learning, and here are a few of them.
1. When Stewie Wouldn’t Let Brian Bring Him Down
Stewie has a crush on Joe and Bonnie Swanson’s new baby girl, and he decides to write and sing a song for her. Stewie spends plenty of time trying to figure out the proper way to do so. Brian is less than helpful when he hears about Stewie’s plans to catch the new girl’s eye, but Stewie doesn’t let Brian’s negativity faze him. Stewie is determined.
Moral of the story: Don’t let others bring you down, you keep doing what’s best for you and what makes you happy.
2. When Peter Became Insecure About His Relationship with Lois
This lesson is taught early on in the series. Lois is feeling unhappy and ridiculously unappreciated by Peter. When Pete opens a bar in the basement of their home and asks her to sing for the men in the room to get out of being in trouble, he doesn’t realize how much she (and the rest of the men) will enjoy it. Peter quickly becomes jealous and insecure about the relationship, and he tries to stop Lois from doing what she loves, putting his feelings before her happiness.
Moral of the story: Appreciate the people in your life and all they do. Don’t let your insecurities control your relationship or your partner’s happiness.
3. When Vinny Gave Up His Home to Bring Brian Back
This one brings up all of the feels. A few episodes after Brian dies, and Stewie realizes that he can go back in time and save his best friend. Vinny, the new family dog, helps Stewie achieve this goal. When Stewie reminds Vinny that if he goes back in time to save Brian, Vinny will never have met the Griffins and will be in the pound once again, Vinny shrugs.
Moral of the story: People do crazy things for the ones they love, including putting people’s happiness before their own. The people who love us will always have our backs.
4. When Chris Took Girl Advice from the Wrong Person
Chris meets a girl who actually finds his awkward nature charming, and she agrees to go on a date with him. Chris is actually a decent human to women in the show. Peter eventually tells him that being nice to women is uncool, and that Chris should “treat her like crap”. Chris seems surprised when the girl he likes doesn’t like his new attitude and dumps him.
Moral of the story: Be true to who you are around others. If “advice” seems like it isn’t what’s best for you, don’t take it. Trust your gut. Never trust Peter. (Spoiler Alert: Eventually Chris realizes he was wrong and apologizes to her, so there's a happy ending.)
5. When Stewie Realized That There’s No Place Like Home
After twelve seasons, Stewie gets fed up with being a Griffin and decides that he deserves a higher caliber of family. He goes back in time to erase himself from the family's history and is reborn into a wealthy British family. Over time, he begins to miss the life he had with the people he was meant to be with. He simply didn't realize how good he had it when he was a Griffin.
Moral of the story: There's no place like home. Appreciate the ones you've been given, the time that you have with them is precious.
