The news has reported a significant amount of advancements in the development of Artificial Intelligence throughout the past year. There has recently been a significant amount of growth in fields such as robotics, algorithms, and 3D printing. Artificial Intelligence is clearly going to be more and more common in the upcoming years, but it is still in the process of being altered and developed. With the speed of development within the field, there are bound to be a few mistakes. Here are a few examples of those mistakes:
1) The Time A.I. was Racist
The Guardian recently released an article regarding an international beauty pageant in which an algorithm was used to select the winners, rather than using human judges. The algorithm was based on factors such as facial symmetry and skin quality. While this was intended to remove bias, it actually did the opposite. The contest contained over 6,000 applicants from over 100 countries, with a resulting 44 winners. Out of the 44 that were selected, only ONE was African American.
2) The Time they Created a Robot Set on Human Annihilation
The video below shows a robot that is designed to have human characteristics and also respond to human interaction. They even went as far to name the robot; so meet Sophia, the brilliant, life-destorying robot. This seems oddly familiar if you've seen, oh I don't know, ANY SCI-FI ROBOT MOVIE EVER. The first one that comes to mind is iRobot. If you haven't seen the movie, let me summarize it for you: Robots take over the world and kill people in the process. The most interesting part about this is that the robot itself will learn from its surroundings and the people it interacts with, making it progressively smarter. This is extremely fascinating, but also slightly disturbing. If the robot is continuously learning, is it possible that it will surpass human intelligence? He goes on to say that "there will be a time where robots are indistinguishable from humans." Well, that's pretty amazing... But also exceptionally terrifying. The video ends with the robot answering the question "do you want to destroy humans?" with "Ok. I will destroy humans." Yikes.
3) The Time Facebook Fired its Trending Team in Favor of an Algorithm
Facebook recently made the decision to fire members from their trending team in favor of using an algorithm that selects popular news to share on its feed. While an obvious issue is the loss of jobs to AI, without humans to regulate the algorithm, it began to curate false news and ridiculous stories. The algorithm went on to push inaccurate stories, such as one regarding Megyn Kelley of Fox News starting that she lost her job for backing presidential candidate Hilary Clinton. The algorithm also decided that a man masturbating with a sandwich was newsworthy.
4) The Time We Realized that A.I. could Replace Jobs
A recent article from the Daily Mail stated that by the year 2020, robots may take more than five million jobs from humans. This is based on the rate of advancement in areas such as robotics, 3D printing, and nanotechnology. The fields that will seemingly take the biggest hit include healthcare, office jobs, and administration roles. This is based on the idea of machines replacing humans for routine tasks. A.I. will also have an impact on fields related to energy and finances, but the article says that the impact will spread across a wide variety of jobs.
5) The Time We STILL Didn’t Listen to Will Smith
The video below shows robots interacting and learning from one another. While this is absolutely fascinating, yet again we have self-learning robots. The video depicts two innocent-looking robots that are compared to children in terms of learning and capability. The robots have trouble standing as they try to get used to their bodies. While it's fascinating, and almost adorable, to watch the robots interact and learn from one another, did anyone else notice just how fast they learn? The creator compares them to children, but within minutes they've fully developed the ability to stand and THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. I'm interested to see what would happen if you left them alone together for more than a week.
Artificial Intelligence is extremely impressive and has made major strides in the last few years. There are obvious kinks that need to be worked out, just like every other invention, but the lines between science-fiction and true science seem to be blurrier than we might have thought. There are plenty of positives in terms of Artificial Intelligence, such as recent advancements in the healthcare field and the progress made in 3D printing. Overall, Artificial Intelligence has clearly done a lot of good for this world and will still continue to make strides in the right direction, but in the mean time, maybe we shouldn't push it.
