We're getting to that place in the year where next semester looms more clearly in front of us. Something that is really on my mind - even more than scheduling classes and all that stuff - is how I'm going to pay for next year. Enter scholarship search stage left. Scholarships! The word overwhelms some people, and provides hope for others. Here are 5 thoughts you will have while looking for scholarships:
1. "Of course I operate a ham radio!"
... or some other obscure activity that is rewarded with scholarships, like making a prom dress out of duct tape or shooting marbles. I mean, who doesn't do those things? Duh! While looking through a scholarship book for the state of Indiana one time, there were a few just dedicated to ham radio operators. Well, guess it's time to bring that out of the attic! It may be worth picking up a new hobby to earn some extra money! Who knows, maybe you will discover some new talent!
2. "There are not enough scholarships out there!"
It's so easy to get frustrated when all the scholarships you're coming across have nothing to do with you or your abilities (like marble shooting or ham-radio operation perhaps). It makes the pickings seem very slim. Some scholarships are very restrictive as to what they're looking for. But don't get discouraged: there are scholarships out there for everyone!
3. "There are too many scholarships out there!"
You will probably at some point experience the reverse of the previous thought. The search for scholarships can be overwhelming! Just one click of the mouse can make hundreds of potential scholarships appear. I love websites like Fastweb that narrow down results to ones that you could actually be eligible for. You feel less overwhelmed and more in control.
4. "It's a national contest. So, I think my chances are pretty good."
It's good to be hopeful. But don't put all your eggs in one national scholarship basket. I've learned that it's more important to spend time on the local ones, even if they're not for that much money. They can add up fast! Still, though, there is always a chance, so if you've got some extra time and essay ideas, go for those big ones, too!
5. "I know I won't get this one."
... but do it anyways! There may be people thinking the same thing and decide not to put their name in. More opportunity for you! You never know what's really going to speak to the people deciding on the recipients. They may just love you and your application! So have some confidence and do your best! And if it doesn't work out, move on to the next one! This whole scholarship process is building character! (Or at least I sure hope it is because I am going to be spending sooo much time in it!) Happy searching!
