"Aladdin" is a classic. So of course it is an amazing musical! However, like every adaptation, there are some differences the everyone should know before going to see the play.
1. Abu is no more.
Aladdin's loving monkey is not present in the musical. I was heartbroken when I found out. Abu is basically replaced with three men: Omar, Babkak, and Kassim. These three are Aladdin's funny and loving sidekicks. They really are an asset to the musical.
2. Rajah is also not in it.
Rajah's sad fate for the musical is the same as Abu's. She is not there and is replaced by three handmaids that help and work for Jasmine. They don't have any names, but are a nice touch to the musical.
3. The Genie.
I love the Genie, but it almost feels like he in the star of the show. And maybe he is! All of the advertisements for the play have the Genie on them.
4. Iago is not a bird.
The annoying sidekick of Jafar is not a bird like it is in the movie. Instead, he is a person. Jafar's sidekick is a real person. Good news is, he is just as annoying and loyal to Jafar as he is in the movie.
5. There is a lot of music added.
The classics from the movie are in the musical. However, there are several added. The Genie gets a few more numbers, Aladdin and Jasmine get a duet, and Babkak, Omar, and Kassim have numbers too! Don't worry, the songs added are an asset to the story.
