So college classes start up in a couple of weeks, I'm sure you have a countdown till move in and the first day of classes, but before all that there's some things you need to do to prepare yourself for it. Here are five things I learned throughout my first year at college that will help you be ready for your first day of class.
1.Start walking
You may think walking to class will be a breeze, you are wrong. Let me tell you something about college campuses, somehow they are hot and have hills, massive loads of hills that will kill any out of shape body. So start walking now to prepare your calves for the daily torture they'll be in for the walk to classes. I know what you're thinking "they have buses to drive me around campus", NO, do not fall for it unless you have an hour to spare, the buses are slow, and it takes no time walk to class, plus you get some steps in.
2. Learn the campus
Sure you've taken tours of your new school, but do you remember where every building is? That's what I thought. Take your schedule, the one with the buildings you'll be in, and walk around campus to those buildings. It's best to do this in the order you will have your classes so you get use to the path you will take, learn short cuts. You can cut through other buildings and it will be a nice little short cut that has AC.
3. Wardrobe
Oh you have a bunch of cute clothes laid out to take to school, that's funny, because by day three you'll be wearing Norts (you know the basic Nike running shorts) and a hat to class for the rest of the semester. So go ahead and load up on the comfy breezy stuff so you can hide how much the summer heat is killing you, while looking effortless at the same time. Make sure you have some comfortable shoes that you have broken in, because the blisters can be real if you try to wear a new pair of shoes around campus. You may think they are comfortable but after a day of sweating a trudging up a hill they aren’t, so do a little test run if you’ve never walked far in them before.
4. Stay hydrated
Buy yourself a water bottle with a filter and fill that thing up every chance you get, there's bottle fill up stations in every building. There's no escaping the summer heat, so you don't want to risk dehydration and drinking water in class will get you in the habit of doing it more and staying healthy.
5. Pack your book bag
If you already have your book bag for class, right now, go get an umbrella and shove it in there. One day it will rain like it never has before, so now you'll be prepared for it and won't be drowning or running through the rain like a maniac, don't be that person just put the umbrella in there and never take it out for any reason, you will thank me later. While you're at it put a light sweater or hoodie in there too, classrooms can be at Antarctic temperatures and unless you want to be a human Popsicle bring the sweater, you won't regret it either. If you have a clicker for any class, throw it in a pocket of your bag, and do not remove it, EVER, teachers are strict on clicker attendance and will not count you present if you don't have it.
