Lets all be honest we have plenty of things lying around that have no use. Many of us who have had experience living away at college have known all to well how things can accumulate. Here is my list of 5 things that you should have without a doubt.
1. Coffee Maker:
I know a lot of you will say but I don't like coffee. The answer is yet. You don't like coffee yet. I promise as soon as you get tired enough or you smell it enough you will pick up a cup of that liquid gold. Plus there are a ton of flavors, and creamers, and sweeteners that you can add to it to help the bold taste.
2. Fan/Heater:
I know this may sound crazy but dorms are not the most insulated buildings ever made. Most likely as a freshman you will not have control over your air temperature. Some days it can be freezing cold, while others burning up hot. Having a fan and a heater even in the months you wouldn't normally use them can be beneficial. Its your room, you want to be comfortable.
3. Pods detergent:
It is so much easier to do laundry if you can take it all at one time and dump it in the washer and walk away. The worst feeling is when you put a load of laundry in and you come back and somebody has used your bottle of detergent. That stuff isn't super cheap. Save some time and stress and get the detergent pods.
4. Filtered water pitcher:
Please don't do what I did and buy large packs of pricey bottled water for a year. Get a filtered water pitcher. The brand that I bought is Brita and I love it! It saves me money in the long run and my water tastes great. Depending on where you will be traveling to for college the water there could taste better or worse than your home. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and enjoy good filtered water. One way to also help the environment is to get a reusable bottle and refill it with your new filtered water from your cool new pitcher.
5. A comfy bed:
Your bed is your refuge, your hideout, your happy place. You want to be comfortable away from home. Lets be honest those generic dorm mattress's are not the most comfortable things ever. Find ways to make your bed as comfortable as possible. You can add mattress toppers to make your bed more squishy or more firm. Have as many pillows and blankets as your heart desires. There is nothing more refreshing than getting a good nights sleep before a big test the next day.
Of course this list could have a lot more, but these are the top 5 things that I think will help you to be successful in your move to a college space.
