1. “Oh you’re from NYC?!”
Every upstate New Yorker knows this one-liner. This usually happens when we go out of state and get asked where we’re from. The conversation tends to go like this: “Where are you from?” “New York.” “Ohhh you’re from NYC that’s so cool!” “No, I’m from upstate New York.” “Where’s that?” “Albany.” “Ohhh you mean Syracuse.” “Yeah sure, Syracuse.” The conversation ends there because we’re just done dealing with you.
2. We don’t all ski
Yes, a big shocker, but not all of us ski in New York. Just because we have many places to ski and get lots of snow doesn’t mean we all participate in the activity.
3. SPAC season
A beautiful time of the year where everyone and his brother attends at least one concert at SPAC and if you attend more than one, you probably bought the lawn ticket seat package.
4. High school rivalry
Maybe it’s just me, but the high school rivalry is so intense up here. We even hate the town right next to us for no reason and have constant disputes over which one of us is better. I guess it’s just an upstate thing.
5. Apple picking
If you live in upstate and you don’t go apple picking do you really live in upstate?? No, you don’t. Everyone goes apple picking every year and we take photos of us while doing it. This is, in fact, just an upstate New York thing.
