5 Things To Expect If You Are New To Texas Tech

It’s the first couple of weeks of class and if you are an incoming freshman or transfer student then you may still be adjusting to the flow of things here in Raiderland. Here are a couple of things you might want to expect if you are new and still learning the lay of the land:

1. Expect it to be hot, cold, rainy and snowy all in one day.

Going to class in the morning in freezing temperatures, lunch in the afternoon with some sunshine and then it’s pouring down rain at night while doing your homework. It happens.

2. Expect to see the same 10 people every day while walking through campus.

Tech is the biggest campus by acreage in the United States and yet, you will somehow still manage to run into everyone you know (and those you wish you didn’t know) almost every other day.

3. Expect to take a picture in front of the seal at some point (or at several points) throughout your time here.

If you don’t take a picture in front of the seal with your guns up do you even go to Tech?

4. Expect to pretty much live at the library during finals week.

Tech’s library is open 24/7 meaning that you will most always find people at the library at any time of day. This is especially true during finals week. Take advantage of the free coffee and test materials they sometimes give out, you’ll thank me later.

5. Expect to completely fall in love with Lubbock.

Lubbock will definitely take a while to get used to (especially if you’re from a big city like Dallas, where I’m from), but trust me- you will definitely develop a soft spot for good old Lubbock. I don’t know what it is but there is just something about Lubbock that will make you miss it even just a tiny bit when you’re away.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
