Finals are over and you’re finally free from classes for a whole three months or so. If you’re like me, you’re anxious about what to do with all this extra free time you’re about to have. Here are some suggestions to keep yourself occupied this summer:
1. Do nothing related to school.
This one seems obvious, but I still feel the need to point it out. Now’s the time to finally watch Netflix without guilt. Sleep in until 3:00 p.m. Eat cake for breakfast. Do whatever you want, because you made it through a whole school year and you deserve it.
2. Start exploring your hometown.
It may feel like you’ve already done everything there is to possibly do in your hometown, but I can assure you there’s more. If you’re near a city, take a weekend trip. If you’ve got a great national park near you, take a day trip. It never hurts to go back to your favorite places as well and do some reminiscing. I have my favorite spots back at home that I can’t wait to get back to.
3. Get a job.
Three months can be a long time to be at home and since your friends are scattered all over the country (and potentially the world) now, you’re going to need a way to get out of the house. Family is great and all, but after a school year of independence, having to listen to your parents all the time might not be the ideal summer situation. A job is the perfect way to get out of the house for an extended period of time, plus you’ll have some extra spending cash when you get back to campus.
4. Eat home cooked meals.
Now’s the time to give up pizza delivery and fast food in general. After two semesters of less than decent food, you should take advantage of the home cooked meals your family offers. Ask your mom to make your favorite or maybe even ask her to teach you how to make it so you can take those skills back to campus in the fall.
5. Tell your parents thank you.
Seriously. They supported you the whole time you were gone, and I know I personally wouldn't have been able to make it through the past two semesters without being able to call on my mom. Plus, they occasionally hit you up with that surprise pizza or gas money.
The summer may be long but you can manage it. Before you know it you’ll be back on campus with your friends and preparing for another semester.
