Now that the holiday season is upon us, here are the top four things to remember:
1. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Yes, around 70% of Americans are Christian, but that doesn't mean everyone you encounter will be celebrating Christmas. Not that there's anything wrong with saying "Merry Christmas" to those who do, but sensitivity for other traditions throughout this season is a necessity.
2. 1 in 6 people in America face hunger, and 49 million struggle to put food on the table. Last Christmas, I was bummed when I didn't get the $200 pair of boots that I asked for - but meanwhile, someone else was probably bummed they couldn't have a meal that day. We're all guilty of overlooking problems from time to time, but try and remember how lucky you are to have all that you have.
3. Calories don't count. Go for the extra slice of pecan pie. And don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.
4. Not busy? Try volunteering. If you simply Google "volunteer opportunities" and then your zip code, tons of things will pop up. A good site to use for soup kitchens is Feeding America. It's a great way to get out of the house and it'll definitely make you feel better about any woes you may have.
5. You're doing great. Did your family just ask if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet? Did your friend from high school just get engaged? Did a girl from your hometown get into an Ivy League? Don't compare yourself to anyone else. You don't owe anyone any answers or explanations. It can be tough to remember this during the holiday season, but I believe in you.
