"High school never ends."
Bowling for Soup got it 100% right. It's only been four years since I've graduated, I still listen to the same music, and nothing has changed "but the faces, the names and the trends."Don't get me wrong--I've grown a lot and matured since my high school days. However, I can't say the same about all of society. Here are some things that never change after high school.
1. Authority
Remember those teachers that would assert authority for no other reason than to remind you that YOU were the student and THEY were the teacher? It's like those bitter students grew up to be managers who do the same thing with their employees. Some managers patronize you by capitalizing on your age, gender or race and others make you feel inferior by staring at their computers or phones while you try to converse with them. The amount of self-importance in the work world is frighteningly high.
2. Cliques
I know it. You know it. We all know it. Whether it's the fashionistas, gamers or the stuck-up snobs, it's all the same. I mean, it's natural right? To gravitate towards a specific type of people and feel comfortable around them. I'm not judging or blaming anyone for that. I just think it's important to let people know it will NOT change after high school.
3. Phone addictions
Remember getting your first phone and being obsessed with texting and calling everyone on your contact list? In the adult world, the obsession morphs into a social media one. And no, millennials aren't the only ones guilty of this. People stalk profiles, online shop and obsess with their own self image. We're all guilty of it. The only difference is that you're now the one paying for your obsession, not your parents.
4. Petty females
There are two types of alpha females--ones who flaunt it and ones who don't. I've always been extremely outgoing and have taken on many leadership roles throughout my life. I haven't, however, felt the need to put down women and girls who are less confident.
Petty females will always have their place in society, unfortunately. They find out what makes you vulnerable and attack it. They steal from you in many ways: friends, self-confidence, thoughts, and happiness. It's usually because they find the need to ruin someone else's life since they're not happy with their own. Sometimes, it's just plain jealousy. Regardless, it's all petty.
5. Jocks
Okay, so there aren't huge dudes walking around in letterman jackets anymore, but their aura lives on forever. You know what I'm talking about. Men who come off not only overly-confident, but also superior and blameless. They make you feel unimportant and small--like your time and energy are worth less than theirs.Maybe they're compensating for inadequate traits they don't feel confident about. Who knows.
