After reflecting upon my semester in Accounting 201, I have come to the surprising conclusion that I have learned quite a bit about myself and what I am capable of. Here is the list of 5 things that Accounting 201 has taught me.
1. Make friends in your classes
Seriously, I put this one as #1 for a reason. Because the homework never seems to line up with what we covered in class, making in A on them is near impossible with only two submissions, but if you have three friends doing it together, that is six submissions. Julia, thank you for always taking one for the team and submitting first every week. Maddie, thank you for catching my stupid mistakes.
2. Appreciate free response questions
On the two multiple choice exams, I scored significantly lower than on the free response exams. They say multiple choice is easier because the answer is right in front of you, but after Accounting 201, I have gained a newfound appreciation for those open-ended questions.
3. Do you best on EVERY assignment
Without in-class assignments, homework, and additional assignments, I would not have earned the grade in accounting that I did. I know plenty of people who blow off the 5 point assignments, but I promise that these really saved my butt in this class.
4. It is possible to paint your nails five times in one day
I'm not joking with this one. The day before our first exam, I literally painted my nails five times. I have become pretty creative in the ways that I procrastinate, but I didn't think this was even possible before Accounting 201.
5. Your best is enough
You don't have to make A's or even B's on all of the exams to make an A in the course. You do, however, have to try your best. I never studied for one exam more in my life than for the second exam. I felt so prepared and confident going into it...and two days later find out that I made a 65, but I wasn't disappointed. I knew that I gave my best. Yes, knowing that your best is a mid D is pretty discouraging, but you can't let that shake your confidence.
If you have to take Accounting 201, I promise, it gets better. Study hard, make friends, and ask questions. Go into it with a positive attitude, and don't let a bad test get you down!
