5 Essential Life Lessons No One Really Wants To Hear

We've all been thinking them, but it's time you heard them.

There are things every now and then that absolutely need to be said. Now, I'm sure a lot of these things have been said to you before but the problem is whether or not you were just staring back and pretending to care or actually listening. Next time you hear some of these things, try and take a minute to really think them over. Because, as much as no one wants to hear them, these things are very important to know.

1. No one cares how many likes you get.

In the day and age we live in, everything resolves around whatever app is on your phone and how many likes you can get from a post. Now don't get me wrong, I literally want to do social media marketing when I graduate from college, so don't take this to mean I think you should delete them all now and never use them again. But when your family is sitting around you and no one has looked up from their phone screens in an hour, but you're all checking to see how many likes you got on your family photos, that's an issue. Our family and even friend dynamics are so different now than they ever were. To the point where having an actual conversation is so far outside the norm that it makes us uncomfortable. Take the time to put the devices down and actually connect with those around you -- I promise you that you won't regret it.

2. No one cares how "broke" you think you are.

Maybe this is because I am surrounded by college kids 24/7, but we are all broke. We all completely get that you ate two-week-old food and are now sick because even spending $1 on ramen seemed a little far fetched. I guarantee though that you probably got a $6 coffee and didn't blink an eye because you "need" it to get you through that long night at North Gate filled with covers, tabs, and Ubers. It's not that you are broke it's that you have never had to budget your money before so why do it now? You can't go around complaining how broke you are when you just so happen to not prioritize what's important. You are never too poor you just chose to prioritize the wrong things that week. It's that simple. You always have room for the things that you make room for.

3. Change starts now, not tomorrow.

If I had a dollar every time I’ve told myself that my diet would start Monday, I would be a millionaire. Change happens DAILY. You do not wake up a completely changed person because the calendar says it’s the beginning of a new week. I promise you that if two Thursdays ago you would have started when you first thought of it, you would be so glad that you did.

4. God does not care who you have been.

I constantly hear about how people can't or won't go to church because they haven't been a good person or how they can't give their life to Christ because they just don't feel like they have earned it yet. That is the best part about God. You are so right, you didn't earn it, you don't deserve it. Guess what? You never will. God loves and forgives us because his one and only Son died for us -- by taking your stand for Christ you aren't saying that you are perfect and worthy of God's love. You are saying that you are broken, you have sinned, but that you trust God completely to take control in your life.

5. You decide how your day goes.

Yes, you can spill your coffee, drop your phone, get cut off in traffic, and get a rude text all before 10AM on a Monday morning and yes, I would agree, you've had a bad morning. BUT, are you going to let a few bad things ruin your day? your week? your month? How are any of those small things worth it? By focusing your energy for twenty minutes on how angry that person made you, you have lost twenty minutes of happiness that you can't get back. Now, does that one small tiny thing deserve twenty minutes of your time? NOPE! Not at all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
