After spending 5 months in Baton Rouge, 1 week at home has already caused me to miss certain things about LSU. Here are some of the most prevalent things that students will miss if they left school for winter break:
1. The clock tower
In addition to ringing every hour, the clock tower also plays LSU’s Alma Mater at noon each day. This is one of my favorite LSU traditions because it never fails to uplift my mood. This tradition brings back fond memories of singing our Alma Mater at the end of each football game.
2. Coffee
As a college student, coffee is a must. It is so refreshing to live on a campus where there is literally a coffee shop on each corner. Whether it’s CC’s or Starbucks, LSU never fails to cater to the needs of students. Staying at home for the holidays feels weird when you have to drive ten minutes just for a latte.
3. Friends
There are no friends like the friends that you make in college. Unlike high school friends, you actually get to choose to be around these people. The friends made in college will likely follow you throughout all of the following stages in life. Home feels a bit less inviting without the people you have spent each day of the last semester with.
4. Sporting events
LSU is no stranger to large-scale sporting events. There is an unspoken unity and comradery between 100,000 fans that pack into Tiger Stadium on any given Saturday night. While home for winter break, many students would give anything for one more Louisiana Saturday night in Death Valley. I know that I would.
While I do miss LSU’s coffee, campus and traditions, I missed home even more. We will be back soon enough and then home will be missed again. But I know that when I return for next semester, I will no longer take these 5 things for granted.
