I know what you all are thinking… What could possibly happen at a library? The answer is a lot. Every day is a mystery of what will happen.
1.
1. People do not like when you say they have a fine on their card.
They will literally fight over a 10 cent fine. Was it really worth me getting my director to come to the desk to tell you that you have cried enough that we will forgive the fine? And don’t get me started on when a person comes in with a $30 fine. They will deny that they have ever used the library in the last 10 years and that someone must have used their card.
2. Trying to avoid all the 'weird' people trying to start a conversation with workers of both genders.
Please, I am just trying to work, I do not want to hear that you learned something about my college. I also do not want to talk about my political views with you because I know that will start an argument and ruin my day. I do not want to hear how you were talking to the other page to see what college he is going to, because he has already told me.
3.
3. Many people really do not know how to use the computer.
Most of my time I am at the computer helping several "regulars" because they do not know how to copy and paste a document or open up a word document. Although there are people that take advantage of the help and want you to do everything for them, most genuinely need the help. The computers are a scary thing for them and you have to have patience in order for them to learn.
4. Patrons complain about things that are out of our control.
Yes, the computers always shut off 20 minutes before we close. No, we cannot get you back on the computers after that. Please stop leaving anonymous notes in the drop box. We know who you are.
5. No matter all the challenges, seeing the kids come in for story time is the best part of working there.
Seeing all the kids run in ready to be read a story and socialize with friends melts my heart. All the tiny faces makes all the struggles of working worth it because I know my work helps them become happier.
