5 Things I Learned My First 5 Weeks of College

Moving to a new town is enough to make anyone nervous beyond belief let alone attending a new university. I remember anxiously awaiting move in day probably more than many. I looked up the billion checklists that google provided as well as the countless YouTube gurus who documented their college experience through vlogs. I thought that college was going to be such a different, life changing experience. In some ways I was right, others I was very wrong. Within my first few weeks there are a few things I have learned.

1. Move in day is going to be stressful. There is no way to make it go perfectly. It may rain and all of your stuff will inevitably get soaking wet causing you to flood out your door room before you've even been there for an hour. Even if you are fortunate enough to have perfect weather, move in day will still be undoubtedly stressful due to the lost students and over bearing parents that will invade your new home.

2. Your roommate will become your new sister/brother. Living with someone is quite possibly the best way to get to know every single detail about someone. Within the first week you will learn when he/she prefers to shower. Whether or not he/she is a morning person. You will learn his/her weird nightly habits. And he/she will learn your as well. You two will live together for an entire school year and during that time you may fight, but at the end of the day, your roommate will be the person there for you after that dumb boy breaks your heart or when you fail that history exam. They will be there for you at your lowest and your highest. Your roommate may not become your best friend, but they will definitely become your new sibling.

3. It is okay to miss a class (or two or three) every once in a while. While you should go to class as much as possible, if you are having a rough day or if you are too sick to get out of bed then it is okay to miss class. I'm not saying to make it a habit to always miss class on Tuesdays, but if you need a mental break don't be afraid to take one.

4. ALWAYS take the opportunity to meet new people. I know that at first you may think those social events are dumb and a waste of your time, but even if they are stupid you still get the chance to meet new people and expand your friend group practically effortlessly.

5. Never be afraid to try new things and experiences. Throughout high school you probably didn't have much variety in your experiences or how you spent your Tuesday nights, but in college you have the opportunity to do so much more with your time. One night you could be driving around random places with your friends singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of your lungs and the next you could be staying up until 2am laughing nonstop about the weirdest of things.

Long story short, college is full of amazing experiences and opportunities. You just have to learn to let go and have fun every once in a while. After all this is the only time in your whole life that you will be able to do these crazy things so don't hold back.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
