Growing up anywhere, in any kind of town there are pros and cons. But I feel like those who grew up in a small town relate to those pros and cons even more. Small towns have things like small schools and small circles but they also have other things like small shops and good people. Where ever you’re from you can probably relate to these, but for those small town kids—they’ll understand even more.
1. Everyone knows everyone
They not only know you, but they know your business as well. So unless you want something to be heard about, just don’t do it. But everyone knowing everyone isn’t always bad… It's not all bad, it is so nice sometimes when I go home and to walk into a grocery store and just seem familiar faces and running into someone (or everyone lol) you know.
2. Small schools
The good part I found about this is, small schools make for small classes and a more personal high school experience. On the other hand, small high schools have what seems to be extra ‘clickie’ groups of people. If you weren’t once a part of a particular group, you probably never will be.
3. Small locally owned shops
Honestly, these are the best things ever. They are owned and managed by someone from your town, helping your town. Plus, smalls local shops have the best things.
4. Our small town should stay a small town
I can remember a time when they tried to put a Walmart in my town. I watched as this tiny place I call home rallied together to say no. Small towns may have more drama than bigger ones, but at the end of it we stick together (I think). We just want to keep our town what we’ve always know it too be… SMALL.
5. Coming home is so relaxing...kinda
In a small town you are not just coming home to your family but to everyone you grew up with. This is such a pro and con. You now can’t leave your house looking like you rolled out of bed because I promise you, you’ll see someone you know. But seeing people you know isn’t always bad, catching up with an old friend can maybe, be exactly what you needed.
I grew up on the east coast of South Carolina, in a small beach town. This place used to be what I knew as South Carolina’s secret spot. During the summers it was crawling with kids who have come home for the summer, families who grew up near by and just a few vacationers. Well, SC’s secret beach has sadly grown, grown too much. When I was a baby, this was a one stop light town—it now has four I think. I like being from a small town, it come with its downfalls but the perks! Oh the perks, they’re great. I wouldn’t trade it.
