Everyone knows that the hardest part of college is choosing a major.
There is a common saying in almost every university that says "Biology is one of the hardest major on campus.. or at least amongst the sciences". Although, some might disagree, I do believe that every major has it's difficulties, but being a science major has got to be the hardest!
Here are a few things every biology major has said, in their collegiate career:
1. "I'm pulling an all-nighter."
Yes, the term "all-nighter" is a real thing that most college students say. The day before the big bio exam can be very daunting. The past week or so has been spent to studying for the test. But somehow pulling an all-nighter is the only way to ace that test the next day. So, a group of four or more is up studying at the coffee shop or library until 3 a.m in the morning, while our other classmates get to have a good night's rest.
2. "I can't... I have lab."
Every biology major has found themselves saying this only a couple hundred times. Since lab usually lasts from late afternoon to evening, there are many missed opportunities to hang out with friends. Whether it is to grab a bite to eat for dinner, hang out in the lobby, or just take a walk, we can't. While of course we would love to just hang out and chill with our friends, our lab grades are just too important to us!
3. "When is the lab report due?"
With taking many science courses in a semester, there might be many labs. And with labs come lab reports. With the many labs that we have, sometimes it is very hard to keep track with the due dates.
4. "I failed that exam."
Alright, we may seem to over-exaggerate a little. But after a long, exhausting test, we feel overwhelmed with the fact that the test was not what we were expecting at all. We might not have completely failed, but we did not do the best that we could have on the test. We always seem to say "What I studied was not on the test." But, in the end, we always find out that we have done just fine. After all, it's either you know the material or you don't.
5. "Hopefully the professor will curve the test."
It is not unusual for a biology major to say this. After the said exam has been taken, and the whole class knows for sure that they all failed, we usually hope and pray and hope that the professor decides to curve the exams. This usually happens in a chemistry class.
While we have all said things like this before, I think it it safe to say that every biology major is proud to be one. Even though we go through many struggles of pulling all-nighters, and several study sessions for just one test, or even sometimes missing out on the fun with our non-biology majors, it is what makes us who we are. We have - and continue to - work hard, even beyond the point of what other majors can fathom. We have claimed the title of "being a biology major."
