As a senior in high school, you can't wait to get out of school and be independent. Right? Who wouldn't want complete freedom from parents? No one telling you when to do your homework, when to study. Leaving high school meant becoming an adult and that's all you ever wanted to be.
Flash forward to the last month of school. The last events of your high school career are over, prom is approaching and then exams. The best part of high school has yet to come: GRADUATION. Walking across the stage along with your classmates to get a piece of paper that tells you, "Congratulations, you completed the easiest part of your life."
As the days slowly drag on towards graduation, the excitement and fear of leaving grows. Then, before you know it, it's graduation. The day everyone looks forward to. Graduation is just like everyday of your senior year... it comes and goes in the blink of an eye.
Summer comes along with it comes getting ready for the next chapter in your life: college. The list of supplies seems to be never ending. The feeling of being excited to go away to college.
There are 5 things that aren't said when going away to college:
1. Although you appear to be excited, that's not all completely true. The excitement that is shown is the excitement of independence. The thought of having no boss always excited you as a little kid. Why wouldn't the realism of independence spark excitement?
2. Will I be able to pass the classes? High school prepared us for college. But, did it really? Was there enough accountability?
3. Am I really ready to live on my own? At the age of 17, 18, or 19 we are just newbies to the adult life. The world is a large, scary place to be "alone" in. You think, "Am I ready for the world?" But more importantly, "Is the world ready for me?"
4. Please, please come and visit me. Just because I am no longer at home doesn't mean I don't need to see a comfortable, familiar face. Silence speaks volumes.
5. Lastly, I LOVE YOU Mom or Dad. In the mind of a new adult, it doesn't seem like the "cool" thing to say. Believe me though, I really do love you. Without you, I probably wouldn't have been able to make it this far in life. There aren't too many people who would want, or be able, to put up with me. But you are different. You accomplished one of the biggest hurdles along with me.
Through all the hustle and bustle of life we know that there are always people that we can depend on. The people who we may pretend we don't need, but really do. After all, you are the one who taught us how to use a spoon.
